As stated before, the Dayton Flyers are not a bad team by any means. A loss to Loyola at the end of the regular season and a loss to Duquesne in the A10 Tournament seemingly hurt Dayton’s ranking. The strength of this Flyers team is their three-point shooting. As a team, Dayton shoots 40.2% from the three-point line (third in the country). That comes on the back of three players who shoot over 38% from behind the arc. The top scorer on this team is DaRon Holmes II. Holmes scores 20.4 points on 54.5% shooting from the field and 38.5% from three. Add to that 8.4 RPG, and he is one of the best players in the country.
As for Nevada, they have won 10 out of their last 12 games. A loss to Colorado State in the Mountain West Tournament probably hurt their seeding here, but the Wolfpack are a dangerous 10-seed. In that 12-game stretch, they gave up 70 points just three times. With Steve Alford coaching them, the Wolfpack only allow opponents to score 67.1 PPG (49th in the country) and shoot 41.7% from the field (57th in the country).
With a flurry of great players on both teams, I think that this has sneaky potential for being the best game of the first round. It makes sense that Nevada is favored in this game, as they are the team that has been playing better basketball recently. With that being said, Dayton is no pushover. Nevada is going to have their hands full with Holmes. If they are able to somewhat limit Holmes, I think that Nevada will win this game, especially with inconsistent scoring from the rest of the team. This is another game where if you get more points for predicting an upset, you have to take Nevada.
