David Roddy Draft Profile
Strengths
David Roddy is certainly one of the more unique players in the 2022 NBA Draft class. He is listed as a forward, yet projects to be a wing player at the next level given his average height. What Roddy may lack in verticality, he makes up for in size and muscular strength. Despite weighing in at over 250 lbs, he plays the game like a skilled guard. Roddy has all sorts of moves, all of which are predicated on his quick first step. He can score in the post when facing up and is also a gifted playmaker at the offensive end. Roddy’s feel for the game is second to none, and he even would turn his own scoring abilities into passing opportunities at the college level. On defense, Roddy plays with effort and aggression on every single possession.
Weaknesses
Unfortunately, players with Roddy’s body type have struggled to make it stick in the NBA in the past. Thus, his professional future may come down to whether or not he is able to shed 20 pounds of bulk. Dropping weight would most definitely improve his lateral quickness and closeout speed on defense. As it stands right now, Roddy doesn’t really have a home on the defensive end. He lacks the height to match up with NBA-caliber big men but also does not have the quickness to stay with speedy guards on the perimeter. Given that Roddy lacks above-the-rim athleticism, nothing will come easy for him offensively at the next level either. Thus, his relatively unproven outside shot could be a bit nerve-wracking for GMs and scouts mulling him in the draft.
