Today, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request by the National Football League to overturn an injunction that blocked Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension.
The result means Elliott’s suspension is likely to begin after the Cowboys’ bye week and would keep Elliott sidelined through the team’s Thanksgiving Day game against the San Diego Chargers.
Elliott was initially suspended over allegations of domestic violence stemming from past incidents in the state of Ohio. Elliott had been granted an injunction days before the season started to delay the suspension but today’s ruling has overturned that. Elliott’s lawyers now could file for another injunction to a higher court, so the issue likely isn’t done yet.
The Cowboys are stumbling a bit at 2-3 in the current season and hold the 3rd place spot in the NFC East. This comes after winning the NFC East and winning the division a year ago. The loss of Elliott would be a tough blow for the Cowboys to handle.
Veterans Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris are next on the depth chart for the Dallas Cowboys, who will play at San Francisco October 22nd.
