What a wild first weekend for college football betting. Alabama showed why they are the pinnacle of college football, destroying an overhyped Miami team, 44-13. Georgia was the real winner of the weekend, getting a victory over Clemson in Charlotte. The Bulldogs defense was lights out all game. Oklahoma and Iowa State both pulled out close wins that raised some questions about each team. Probably the second-biggest winner of the weekend was Penn State, getting a big win over Wisconsin in Camp Randall. Texas, UCLA and Cincinnati all pulled out season-opening win as wells.

On the other hand, LSU and Ed Orgeron lost to Chip Kelly in UCLA. The team searching for the most answers is North Carolina. A tough Virginia Tech defense picked off Sam Howell three times and the Tar Heels couldn’t recover, losing 17-10. Finally, the most shocking loss came on Saturday, as Washington fell at home to Montana.

Looking ahead to Week 2, here are three college football betting locks to place today.

College Football Betting Locks for Week 2

Iowa at Iowa State Under 45

I really don’t need to explain much with this pick. Iowa State won a barn-burner versus FCS Northern Illinois on Saturday, 16-10. Cyclone quarterback Brock Purdy complete 21 passes for under 200 yards. Breece Hall, one of the best returning running backs in the country, only mustered 69 rushing yards on 23 carries. As for Iowa, they did put up some points in beating Indiana, but the defense led the way for the Hawkeyes. Kirk Ferentz and company rode the back of defensive back Riley Moss, who turned two interceptions into touchdowns for the Hawkeyes. Both of these teams have solid defenses, but on offense, they are somewhat inept. Iowa State and Breece Hall should be one of the best offensive teams in the Big 12, but are closer to the bottom of the conference, rather than the top. Ferentz’s style at Iowa has always been just finding ways to win. Even though Iowa put up 34 this past weekend, it wouldn’t surprise me if both these teams combined didn’t score 34 next weekend in Ames.

College Football Betting Pick: Under 45

South Carolina (+2) at East Carolina

Going into the season, many college football fans were very down on the Gamecocks this year. Just a couple of days ago they named Zeb Noland, a North Dakota State transfer, the starting quarterback. Well, all the Gamecocks did was shut those critics up in their 46-0 drubbing of Eastern Illinois. It was only Eastern Illinois, but the Gamecocks handled their business. Noland was 13-22 passing for four touchdowns.

This week, they will take on East Carolina, a team that lost to Appalachian State on opening weekend. By no means are the Gamecocks a top-25 team, but they are about a touchdown better than the Pirates. Their defense gave up nearly 450 yards of total offense against Appalachian State. Gamecock running back Zaquandre White rushed the ball 12 times this weekend for 128 yards and a touchdown. While his yards per rush should drop this week, his production won’t. Not to mention that ECU gave up over 225 yards rushing last weekend. This spread could rise to as much as five by the weekend, so get it here at -2.

Rutgers (-2) vs Syracuse

Don’t look now, but Greg Schiano is building something at Rutgers. Last year, he led the Scarlet Knights to three wins and a 3-6 record in the Big Ten. Those aren’t huge leaps, but for a program that was as lost as Rutgers was, this was impressive. This past weekend, Schiano led the squad to a 61-14 win against a solid Temple program. Quarterback Noah Vedral looks more comfortable every week. The Melton brothers are playmakers on both sides of the ball. It seems Schiano may have brought Rutgers football back to a respectable level. Either way, Rutgers is poised to have a good season, so Rutgers -2 is the play. Go ahead and lock it in.

College Football Betting Pick: Rutgers -2
