Butler comes into this 2022 season after underperforming last year. They brought in two freshmen and four transfers, including a big transfer in Manny Bates from North Carolina State. By most preseason predictions of the Big East, Butler is expected to finish ninth, which would be yet another disappointing year. In their “warm up” game against New Orleans, Manny Bates dropped 25 and 11 boards, and every starter hit double-digits which could be a good sign. The team as a whole shot 56.3% from the field, 16.7% from three and 61.9% from the line (13-21). This Butler team could surprise people Monday night if they get into a shootout in Pennsylvania.
Penn State, on the other hand, was also a disappointing team, but they did not have high expectations. They are a team this year thought to possibly control their destiny and could be on top of the Big Ten, with no clear team standing out. In their first game against Loyola Maryland, they had four guys in double-digits, with fifth-year senior Camren Wynter leading the way with 18 points.
