The third Sunday of the NFL season is officially in the books, and oh, what a wild day it was! The city of Los Angeles put itself on the football map in a big way. An MVP candidate returned to his dominant ways. And a record-setting field goal was made. So many great storylines saw plenty of noteworthy fantasy football stat lines as well. While there were several players who stood out with top fantasy performances, Week 3 also produced its fair share of disappointments. Hopefully, your teams weren’t hurt too badly by the numerous stars who turned in fantasy duds on Sunday.

The following article looks at some of the biggest fantasy football disappointments from Week 3 of the NFL season across each position. This week’s notable fantasy disappointments include David Montgomery, Tyreek Hill, Julio Jones and T.J. Hockenson.

Week 3 Fantasy Football Disappointments | RBs

David Montgomery | Chicago Bears

Stat Line: 10 carries, 34 yards; 2 receptions, 21 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 7.5 (RB37)

In all fairness to David Montgomery, the entire Bears offense was downright awful in their Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Chicago finished with just 47 yards of total offense…for the game! Not just one quarter or one half, but 47 total yards FOR THE GAME! It was a horrible first career start for rookie QB Justin Fields. Making matters worse for the Bears offensively is a bad offensive line and horrendous play-calling from head coach Matt Nagy. Montgomery finished outside the top-30 at the RB position in fantasy this week with just 7.5 PPR points. Montgomery is a great player, but it’s extremely difficult to get excited about any Bears’ fantasy assets right now.

Nick Chubb | Cleveland Browns

Stat Line: 22 carries, 84 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 8.4 (RB34)

On the opposite sideline from Montgomery on Sunday was another disappointing fantasy football day from Browns back Nick Chubb. He failed to score a touchdown, snapping a streak of eight straight regular-season games reaching pay dirt. This ultimately doomed what might have been a solid fantasy stat line. Chubb saw 12 more carries than teammate Kareem Hunt, but his failure to both score and get involved in the passing game saw him finish with just 8.4 fantasy points on the day.

Meanwhile, Hunt scored and had six receptions to finish as the RB2 in PPR for Week 3. Despite the bad week, Chubb is still the lead ball-carrier in Cleveland. He should have no trouble rebounding.

Damien Harris | New England Patriots

Stat Line: 6 carries, 14 yards; 2 receptions, -3 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 3.1 (RB53)

After turning in a highlight-reel touchdown run last week, Damien Harris was among the major fantasy football disappointments on Sunday. The Patriots’ offensive line struggled mightily against the New Orleans Saints. The result was a paltry 14 yards rushing on six carries for Harris. With New England falling behind and having to air it out in the second half, Harris’ role in the offense was largely nonexistent. The talent is there, but the Pats must clean up the O-line play for Harris to maximize his potential in fantasy football.

Week 3 Fantasy Football Disappointments | WRs

Tyreek Hill | Kansas City Chiefs

Stat Line: 5 receptions, 56 yards; 1 carry, 11 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 9.7 (WR47)

For a WR3 or FLEX player, you could probably do a whole lot worse than 9.7 fantasy points. However, for a superstar like Tyreek Hill who had a first-round fantasy football ADP, finishing as the WR47 in Week 3 is a major disappointment. The fact that it came in a fairly high-scoring game against the Los Angeles Chargers is a bit surprising. Furthermore, this marks the second straight week in which Hill has largely been irrelevant in fantasy. After going absolutely bananas in the season-opener, Hill has caught just eight of 11 targets for 70 yards and no TDs over the last two weeks combined.

Julio Jones | Tennessee Titans

Stat Line: 3 receptions, 47 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 7.7 (WR57)

Julio Jones has now struggled in two of his first three games as a member of the Tennesse Titans. Perhaps what makes his lack of production on Sunday all the more perplexing is the fact that fellow Titans wideout A.J. Brown exited the game early with an injury. Instead of taking advantage, Jones was held to just three catches. He also failed to find the end zone while the likes of Chester Rogers, Nick Westbrook and Jeremy McNichols all caught TD passes.

Robert Woods | Los Angeles Rams

Stat Line: 3 receptions, 33 yards; 1 carry, 5 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 6.8 (WR61)

With no one able to slow down Cooper Kupp through three weeks of play, Robert Woods has almost become an afterthought in the Rams offense. He has seen a pretty level target share, but the production simply has not been there. Week 3 saw Woods finish outside of the top-60 at the WR position in PPR scoring. Meanwhile, Kupp went off for over 30 fantasy points once again. Of further concern here is the fact that each of DeSean Jackson, Van Jefferson and tight end Tyler Higbee all finished with more receiving yards than Woods on Sunday. Those who do have faith that Woods gets things turned around have a true buy-low scenario to capitalize on.

Week 3 Fantasy Football Disappointments | TEs

T.J. Hockenson | Detroit Lions

Stat Line: 2 receptions, 10 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 3.0 (TE30)

To be fair, the Lions’ entire Week 3 game against the Baltimore Ravens was a bit unexpected. A sky-high total and two struggling defenses had many expecting a lot of points. Instead, neither team reached 20. Then there was the NFL record-setting 66-yard field goal by Justin Tucker to win it as time expired. Needless to say, a poor fantasy football line from T.J. Hockenson wasn’t the only obscure development on Sunday in Detroit.

That said, the Ravens had been absolutely gashed by tight ends in each of their first two games. While one could make the argument that they had faced two of the best TEs in the league, Hockenson is widely viewed as a top-5 player at the position in fantasy. He was virtually nonexistent in Week 3, finishing with just two catches for 10 yards. Even fellow TE Darren Fells outgained him. Given the lack of reliable pass-catchers in this offense, it is by no means time to freak out if you own Hockenson.

Kyle Pitts | Atlanta Falcons

Stat Line: 2 receptions, 35 yards
PPR Fantasy Points: 5.5 (TE21)

It’s one thing to look back on the 2021 NFL Draft and say that perhaps the Falcons should have drafted a future starting QB at No. 4 overall. While they got a supremely talented player in Kyle Pitts, the first three weeks have fans and fantasy football managers extremely frustrated. If you’re going to draft Pitts with the fourth overall pick, at least pepper him with targets! Instead, the former Florida Gator finished with just 5.5 fantasy points in Week 3. He saw only three targets in Sunday’s win over the New York Giants. And just to insult fantasy managers further, fellow Atlanta tight end Lee Smith caught a touchdown pass. The Falcons have not been very inspiring at all offensively through the first three weeks.
