Big West basketball was a tale of two extremes this college basketball season. The conference features seven teams with a record of over .500. On the flip side, three teams finished with less than three wins in conference and less than eight wins overall. Long Beach State led the way in the Big West basketball standings, with a 12-3 record in conference with an 18-11 overall record. The only Big West team that was featured in the mid-major Top-25 was UC-Irvine with a 15-9 record. UC San Diego is ineligible to compete for the Big West title or postseason events until the 2024-25 season, due to reclassification. Their conference games were not recorded. The following contains the Big West Tournament bracket and schedule, as well as a preview of what we can expect to see.

Big West Basketball Breakdown

Last year’s Big West Tournament went pretty much as planned as the only two upsets in the tournament were in the first round. UC Santa Barbara entered the 2021 tournament as the one seed and won every game by eight or more points. In fact, the closest game last year for UC Santa Barbara was against Long Beach State, which enters this year’s tournament as the one seed. The 49ers excel at scoring the ball, scoring 74.3 points per game. Their best attribute is their ability to get to and convert on free throws. They rank ninth in the country on free throw attempts per game and eighth on free throw makes per game.

The school that has the biggest task of knocking off the 49ers is CSU Fullerton. The Titans feature five players who average over eight points per game. Although the Titans don’t specialize in anything in particular, they do rank 47th in the country in limiting their opponents’ free throw attempts and thus their conversions as well to 10.3 per game.

The preseason poll for the Big West was all over the place. The projected winner, UC Santa Barbara finished fifth in the conference. The projected last-place team, CSU Northridge finished eighth. The biggest overachiever in relation to the preseason poll was Long Beach State, which was projected to finish eighth. The biggest underachiever in relation to the preseason poll was UC Santa Barbara.
