Big 12 Basketball Breakdown
The aforementioned Texas Longhorns took the Big 12 Tournament crown last year with a win over Cade Cunningham and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Baylor was the one seed and lost to the Cowboys, before winning the NCAA Tournament championship. Kansas should be viewed as this year’s champion representative in the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks are led by Ochai Agbaji, who is a frontrunner for the National Player of the Year. Four players score ten or more points per game. Only one player in Bill Self’s rotation is a freshman. This team is loaded with experience, including senior Arizona State transfer Remy Martin.
Baylor poses the biggest threat to Kansas, as they are currently ranked third in the country. The Bears feature a team consisting of some players who were on the championship team last year. Four players on the team average over ten points, including three who average over 13 points per game. Baylor will be without Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua as he suffered a leg injury late in the regular season. The Bears excel in scoring and rebounding, finishing 22nd in offensive rebounds (12.1) and 47th in scoring per game (76.8).
In relation to the preseason poll, the biggest underachiever was West Virginia, who was projected to finish fifth but finished tenth. The biggest overachiever in relation to the preseason poll was Iowa State, who was projected to finish 10th, but finished sixth.
