One would have to search high and low on the 2022 NBA Draft big board to find a player who expanded his game from his freshman to sophomore seasons more than Bennedict Mathurin. In his first season at Arizona, Mathurin’s role was simply that of a spot-up three-point shooter. Thanks to his exceptional athleticism, he was tasked with doing a whole lot more as a sophomore. Despite increased responsibilities at both ends, Mathurin maintained a three-point shooting clip of 37%. He also has exceptional passing abilities and a tremendous feel for the game. Whether it’s pick-and-roll or out in transition, Mathurin can operate an offense and make the right reads regardless of the situation.
Weaknesses
Unfortunately, a propensity to commit turnovers sort of comes with the territory of being a player who is willing to make risky passes. Threading the needle against NBA-caliber defenders will only prove to be more difficult.
