Cincinnati Bengals Preview
It was a spirited effort by the Bengals in their season-opener. Concerns regarding quarterback Joe Burrow in his return from a nasty knee injury were answered in a big way. The second-year pro threw for 261 yards and a pair of scores as Cincinnati upset the Minnesota Vikings in overtime. If not for a fourth-quarter collapse, the Bengals would have won this game in regulation.
It was a tremendous NFL debut for rookie wideout Ja’Marr Chase. Reunited with Burrow after their days at LSU, Chase overcame a preseason full of drops to top 100 yards receiving and find the end zone in Week 1. Running back Joe Mixon also had a huge game, turning 29 carries into 127 yards and a score. With second-year receiver Tee Higgins also finding the end zone, Bengals fans were no doubt salivating over the dynamic young talent that now litters their team’s offense.
Chicago Bears Preview
Given that their Week 1 matchup saw them take on the vaunted Los Angeles Rams defense, expectations had to be kept in check for the Bears’ offense. It was far from an inspiring performance. Veteran QB Andy Dalton drew the start, but the clamorings from Chicago faithful for rookie first-round pick Justin Fields began quickly. Perhaps such cries only grew louder when Fields came on in the red zone and ran for the Bears’ first touchdown of the game. Dalton still completed 27-of-38 passing attempts, but a lack of offensive creativity combined with the talented L.A. defense worked to limit the damage.
Tailback David Montgomery was a key bright spot for the Bears in their season-opening defeat. He totaled 108 yards on just 16 carries and also found the end zone. Perhaps of greater concern for the Bears is the defensive side of the ball. A once-feared unit is no longer such. The secondary in particular got lit up by the Rams’ passing attack in Week 1. Despite being NFL betting favorites, Chicago could have a hard time containing the Bengals’ aerial arsenal on Sunday.
