The Arizona Wildcats were one of the best teams this season all year long. Finding themselves atop the rankings for most of the season, they finally have a player who can carry the team in Caleb Love. Love’s inconsistencies have shown over his college career, but this season has been by far his best, averaging 18.1 PPG on 42.1% shooting from the field. Love is the leader of the nation’s third-highest-scoring team (87.9 PPG). The Wildcats make the third-most two-point shots in the country, at 23.7. On top of that, they hold opponents to just eight three-point makes per game.
Long Beach State is a really weird team. They run at a fast pace (29th in the country). With that fast pace, you would think that they get a ton of threes up per game, but they actually only shoot 17.7 per game and make 5.5. They do hit a lot of shots inside of the arc though, making 44.2 per game (fourth in the country). Led by one of the best scorers in the nation, Marcus Tsohonis (17.8 PPG on 40.5%), it would be wrong to say that Long Beach State has absolutely no shot in this game.
There is a reason that Arizona is a 20.5-point favorite in this game. While they have shown inconsistencies that leave them vulnerable, I can’t imagine that will affect them too much in this game. Arizona should easily outscore Long Beach State in this game and if LBSU does find themselves down big, it is going to be hard to come back making just 5.5 threes per game.
