The Alabama Crimson Tide and Grand Canyon Antelopes face off in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Basketball Tournament. In the first round of the tournament, the Crimson Tide’s offense once again proved its dominance, taking down the Charleston Cougars, 109-96. As for Grand Canyon, the Lopes took down a really good Saint Mary’s team for a classic 5/12 upset.

The Alabama Crimson did what they do best in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and scored the ball. They found success out of All-American guard Mark Sears. With Sears being one of the best players in the country, he was able to produce 30 points on an incredible 9/13 shooting on Friday. Sears was not the only one scoring though, as he also added five assists. Latrell Wrightsell added 17 points on 6/8 shooting, as well as 5/6 shooting from three and Aaron Estrada scored 13 points. As a whole, Bama had eight players who scored six or more points. The team shot 60% from the field and 56% from the three.
In what seemed to be a tough matchup for Grand Canyon, they took care of business against a really good Saint Mary’s team fairly easily. Tyon Grant-Foster was the star of the show for the Lopes, as he registered 22 points. Ray Harrison added another 17 points. Like Alabama, Grand Canyon dominated doing what they did do best: getting to the free throw line. The Antelopes got to the charity stripe 36 times, making 28 free throws. Coming into the tournament, Grand Canyon was only allowing 4.9 threes per game to opponents, that is certainly going to have to continue if they want to take down the strong Crimson Tide offense.
While Grand Canyon was able to handle the strong defense from Saint Mary’s, it is going to have to be a completely different game plan against Alabama. The Lopes are going to have to lock in defensively and contest as many Crimson Tide three point attempts as possible. Alabama is going to hit some threes, so you can’t panic, but it could be detrimental quick if the Crimson Tide get out to a hot start. What I am concerned about for Grand Canyon and what I think will do them in is their lack of fire power to keep up with Bama. They did have four players in double digits, but that was with the lead and opportunities to work for good shots. I am not so sure that is going to be the case in this game.
