AEW Dynamite Results 7/6
Wardlow def. Scorpio Sky & American Top Team in Streetfight to win TNT title.
Jon Moxley promo: He knows exactly what he’s doing in challenging Brody King later tonight, then they’ll see who the real monster is.
Mark Sterling approaches Keith Lee backstage and tries in vain to get him to side with him against Swerve Strickland.
Christian and Luchasaurus are confronted by Matt Hardy, who tries to stop anyone else from being manipulated, but Christian mocks Jeff Hardy’s DUI and Luchasaurus laid him out.
Claudio Castagnoli and Jake Hager promise to settle their score next week and hint at history from WWE.
Swerve In Our Glory def. Butcher & the Blade, interrupted by Hobbs & Starks and the Young Bucks to set up a Tag Team title match.
Chris Jericho and the J.A.S. attack Ruby Soho to get back at Eddie Kingston.
The Dark Order come out to thank Brodie Lee’s hometown, then beat up QT Marshall along with Hangman Adam Page.
Malakai Black promises pain to Jon Moxley on behalf of Brody King.
Rush def. Pentagon Oscuro.
The Gun Club & the Acclaimed def. Ruffin It & Fuego Del Sol, The Gun Club turns on the Acclaimed after the match.
Miro calls out Malaki Black.
Mark Sterling and Danhausen set up a match between Tony Neese and Orange Cassidy for Friday.
Toni Storm & Thunder Rosa def. Nyla Rose & Marina Shafir.
Daniel Garcia calls out Wheeler Yuta, FTR call out the Briscoes for ROH Death Before Dishonor.
Jon Moxley def. Brody King to retain AEW Interim World Championship.
AEW Dynamite Highlights
Moxley Survives King
Brody King proved to be an interesting choice as the first challenger to Mox’s AEW Interim Championship, even though the result was never in doubt here. Commentary, especially William Regal, of course, did an excellent job putting over King as a dangerous competitor looking for his sleeper hold. Then, when Mox survived the onslaught of King only to get him to pass out with a choke of his own, it made Mox seem like he could step up to anything thrown his way. Most crucially, the champ is over like rover with the crowd currently.
A one-week program, but still a strong showing to underline the strength of Mox as the new king of AEW in CM Punk’s absence.
Wardlow Looks Strong
I haven’t loved Wardlow’s story with Scorpio Sky and American Top Team, but apparently, neither did AEW here. Even though Sky brought about 10 MMA fighters with him, Wardlow proceeded to basically squash all of them in this streetfight to win his first AEW gold. I don’t love how tame this streetfight was, but the idea was to make Wardlow look wildly strong and it succeeded.
Now, this feud has to be over so Sky can recover from this beatdown, so push Wardlow while the crowd still loves him and his star should continue rising without issue.
AEW Dynamite Lowlights
Nonsense in the Women’s Division
One match is not good enough, especially when that one women’s match was a tag where the top feuding talent is somehow suddenly friends? Rosa and Storm were a good team, but if the idea is to build this feud right now, then wasting time tagging them up is nonsense. Even if the name Thunder-Storm is great. AEW can’t give us one-and-a-half segments of women each week and expect investment, especially if that one segment doesn’t progress a feud at all. This all felt like a waste of time before they break up again, and I just expect more from AEW overall.
Tone Deaf
I do like heel Christian, but if he’s gonna be edgy, then it has to tie into storylines. Last week, making fun of Jungle Boy’s dead dad at least was part of the feud, but tonight was different. Matt Hardy’s intrusion seemed like it existed only to get the burns about Jeff’s abuse issues in there. I like the reasons Matt gave for being there, and I’m not opposed to making Jeff’s issues canon if he wants them to be, but it didn’t fit the story here. It just felt like Christian said what he said because it was the most offensive thing possible, and that low-hanging fruit won’t sustain his character, especially if it comes across as hollow as tonight’s segment did.
AEW Headlines
Theory and Liv Morgan become Mr. and Mrs. Money in the Bank, respectively. Morgan then cashed in to become the new SmackDown Women’s champion.
Kenny Omega criticizes Jim Cornette in a viral interview on Twitch.
AEW builds to ROH Death Before Dishonor on July 23rd.
