Aces vs Sparks WNBA Betting Game Preview

Las Vegas Aces Preview

Although the Aces are still the top team in the league record-wise, the past week has made them look extremely vulnerable for the first time all season. The rut began one week ago when Las Vegas barely got past Minnesota by a single point. That result was hardly in line with pregame WNBA betting odds which favored the Aces by 15 points. Then came a loss of historic proportions to Chicago in which the Aces blew a 28-point lead. It marked the largest deficit ever made up in league history. Las Vegas also lost on Saturday night to Washington in overtime.

On the heels of sustaining back-to-back defeats for the first time all season, the Aces now must rise to the occasion and respond on the road tonight. They certainly have the offensive firepower to do so. A’ja Wilson had another monster game in Saturday’s overtime loss with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Both Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young scored 20 points apiece as well. However, Las Vegas will need to play better on the defensive end than they did during the rough three-game homestand if they hope to cover tonight’s Aces vs Sparks betting prediction.

Los Angeles Sparks Preview

The Sparks certainly know a thing or two about struggling with inconsistency this season. That theme continued for L.A. throughout this past week. On Tuesday, the Sparks picked up an upset win over Washington on their home floor. Just two days later, they were blown out by Chicago in what amounted to a 23-point loss, also at home. Just when much of the WNBA betting market was not giving them any shot against Seattle, the Sparks managed to upset the Storm on the road Saturday night.

Perhaps what made Saturday’s win most impressive is that L.A. achieved it without their leading playmaker in Jordin Canada. Bettors will want to monitor her status for today’s Aces vs Sparks prediction as she remains questionable with an illness. Despite Liz Cambage only scoring three points, the Sparks totaled 85 in Saturday’s win, their highest offensive output in the month of June. Nneka Ogwumike (24), Katie Lou Samuelson (17) and Brittney Sykes (15) led the charge offensively. Kristi Toliver also supplied 11 points in 29 minutes in just her fourth game since rejoining the team after fulfilling her NBA coaching duties with the Washington Wizards.

Aces vs Sparks Stats

  • Washington is averaging 78.7 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 10 in the WNBA).
  • Washington is surrendering 75.6 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 1 in the WNBA).
  • Las Vegas is averaging 91.5 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 1 in the WNBA).
  • Las Vegas is surrendering 83.0 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 8 in the WNBA).

Aces vs Sparks Prediction

The past three games have hardly been exemplary of the kind of basketball that the Aces have played for much of the season. Perhaps getting away from Michelob Ultra Arena and back out on the road is just what Las Vegas needs to get righted around.

If two previous matchups against the Sparks this season are any indication, the Aces should be able to take care of business in Monday’s contest. Las Vegas dropped 104 on L.A. in a 28-point home win back in late May. The Aces also won by 17 the second time the teams faced off in SoCal on June 11th.

The major personnel advantage that the Aces have over the Sparks is their backcourt. Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young are perhaps the best guard tandem in the WNBA. As L.A. is a frontcourt-dominated team, they struggle to match up with the Aces’ speed and quickness. If Jordin Canada does wind up missing tonight’s game, the advantage on the perimeter will presumably become even more pronounced for Las Vegas.

At the end of the day, the Sparks simply have not proven capable of playing the kind of defense needed to be competitive with Las Vegas. After all, the Aces average nearly six more points per game than the next-highest scoring team in the league! The fact that the Sparks are the second-worst scoring defense and rank tenth in defensive rating does not bode well for their chances tonight. It would take a top-notch offensive performance for L.A. to simply keep pace against the high-powered Aces.
