The Green Bay Packers have yet to focus on football this offseason, which could quickly prove to be an issue. However, there is a bit of good news today. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Aaron Rodgers has indicated to people close to him that he plans on playing for the Packers this season.
This comes soon after general manager spoke at the Packer owners meeting, saying he remains “hopeful” for a positive outcome. He also named Rodgers as a part of the “returning nucleus.”
Of course, this is good news for Packers fans. The reigning MVP and most talented quarterback possibly ever will be taking snaps this season. Despite the team’s lack of focus this offseason, having Rodgers under center makes the Packers Super Bowl contenders.
Rodgers also posted to Instagram recently, along with Davante Adams, the famous “Last Dance” picture of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. If this is indeed Rodgers’ last dance in Green Bay, one would assume he is looking for an ending like the Chicago Bulls, where the Packers win the Super Bowl.
Of course, this is the big question. While a full resolution between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers organization is possible, it is unlikely. So, we need to find out why he has decided to return to Green Bay to play in 2021.
There could have been contract negotiation talks behind closed doors that gives him an incentive to come back. What I have been pitching is moving a large guaranteed amount of money up to March, essentially forcing the Packers to committ to Rodgers long term or trade him at that point. This is the best scenario, as it gives us a definite timeline and it also ends with Rodgers signing an extension or the Packers getting assets back in a trade.
Another option would be to put a void into Rodgers’ contract, allowing him to walk in the offseason. This is a scary thought. Would you rather have one season of Aaron Rodgers and no draft picks, or no more snaps from Rodgers and at least three first-round draft picks? Most would say the latter, regardless of how you feel about the MVP. However, if a void was agreed upon, it would mean Gutekunst chose the former.
Packers Training Camp is here soon, and many questions will be answered this week. Now, we wait.
