We discussed a few days ago how the Detroit Lions signed Pro Bowler Zach Ertz ahead of the NFC Championship. While Ertz has shown this season he still can play and be successful in the league, this signing looked like more of an “intel signing” due to Ertz’s success against the San Francisco 49ers and playing in their division with the Arizona Cardinals.

Now, a day ahead of the NFC Championship, which is the biggest game in the franchise’s history to this point, Ertz was ruled inactive for the game.

Detroit Lions Rule Zach Ertz Out For NFC Championship

There is no doubt that the information Zach Ertz brought to the Lions about the San Francisco 49ers has been used when creating the game plan throughout the week. He was also able to share little tips to the offense, especially rookie tight end Sam LaPorta. So, the signing of Ertz was a useful one for Detroit despite his playing status. However, it would have been nice to see him on the field.

I’m sure the Lions simply do not want to mess up a good thing. Their offense is playing very well, and we know Dan Campbell has created a culture of loyalty and hard work. For this reason, he has decided someone like Anthony Firkser or Brock Wright deserves game-day roster spots over Ertz. We said at the FlurrySports Podcast that Campbell’s only flaw is that he is too loyal. So, was this a decision that will cost the Lions a Super Bowl appearance?

Ertz has played in seven games this season, totaling 27 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown. He is also a willing blocker. Wright has 91 yards on the season while Firkser has none. With LaPorta being less than 100 percent, it does seem as though Ertz, a player who put up six catches for 52 yards on the 49ers earlier in the season, could have been a useful target or at least a decoy for Detroit.

If the Lions win the NFC Championship and make the Super Bowl, it will be interesting to see if they can find a place for Zach Ertz in the game plan.
