Storm vs Sun WNBA Betting Game Preview

Seattle Storm Preview

It may not have been pretty, but the Storm did manage to prevail in their road contest against Minnesota on Tuesday night. Seattle found out the day of the game that veteran point guard Sue Bird would be unavailable due to an illness. The first half of the game was particularly sloppy for the Storm and they quickly found themselves down seven at the break to one of the worst teams in the league. Fortunately, Seattle has a dominant player in Breanna Stewart who is capable of putting the team on her back on off nights.

Stewart did just that in Tuesday’s two-point win. Her massive stat line was highlighted by 29 points and eight rebounds. Stewart continues to lead the entire WNBA in scoring with 22.3 points per game on the season. The Storm certainly needed every bit of her production to get past Minnesota on Tuesday. With Bird officially questionable to play in tonight’s contest, another big game from Stewart may be necessary for Seattle to cover the Storm vs Sun prediction as road underdogs.

Connecticut Sun Preview

One week ago today, the Sun had a four-game winning streak snapped in the form of a home loss to Chicago. Connecticut wasted little time in getting back on track with an offensive clinic Wednesday night against Atlanta. The Sun got it going right away with a 31-point first quarter and proceeded to drop 105 points on what was the league’s top-rated defense. What really made the performance noteworthy was that none of the Sun’s “Big Four” were among the team’s top two scorers.

Typically, Connecticut is a frontcourt-dominated team. With stars like Jonquel Jones, Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner, it’s no surprise why. In Wednesday’s victory, however, it was the guard tandem of Courtney Williams (20 points) and Natisha Hiedeman (18) that led Connecticut offensively. Williams also grabbed eight boards in an incredibly efficient performance while Jones fell one rebound shy of a double-double. Given all of the talent on this Sun team, they are deserving WNBA betting favorites ahead of Friday’s high-profile showdown against Seattle.

Storm vs Sun Stats

  • Seattle is averaging 78.8 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 9 in the WNBA).
  • Seattle is surrendering 76.8 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 3 in the WNBA).
  • Connecticut is averaging 88.3 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 2 in the WNBA).
  • Connecticut is surrendering 78.8 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 5 in the WNBA).

Storm vs Sun Prediction

We have one prior head-to-head matchup between these teams this season to assist in making tonight’s Storm vs Sun prediction. Connecticut went to Seattle and came away with an impressive 93-86 win exactly 12 days ago. The Sun did a fantastic job defensively on Breanna Stewart in that game. The league’s leading scorer was held to 12 points and also only managed three rebounds. Both of those totals are well below her season averages.

On the surface, one has to believe that Stewart will bounce back and play better in tonight’s matchup. However, it is somewhat difficult to trust that the Seattle offense will operate at a high level for four full quarters if Sue Bird is not able to go. Thus, bettors must monitor her status ahead of tonight’s game.

While the Sun have proven capable of giving up points in bunches defensively, outscoring Connecticut’s potent offense is another story. Wednesday’s victory over Atlanta served as explicit proof of just how deep this Sun team is. If Jonquel Jones, Brionna Jones and DeWanna Bonner all score 20+ points tonight as they did in the first meeting against Seattle this season, the Sun will be tough to beat. In that scenario, the WNBA betting odds that list tonight’s game total at 161.5 points also figure to wind up being set too low.

Storm vs Sun Prediction: Over 161.5 (-108 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
