Penguins vs Flyers Season Series in Review
As stated earlier, Penguins vs Flyers is always a game you can look forward to. Historically, these two teams have always played each other tough no matter their records or talent levels. So far, this season has not proven to be much different.
Surprisingly, the Penguins vs Flyers season series is currently led by the Flyers, 4-2. This information may shake some confidence out of Penguins bettors tonight, but it shouldn’t.
Two of those four Flyers wins came on the first two contests of the season for Pittsburgh. At the time, the Penguins were dealing with injuries to a number of players, while Philadelphia was coming off a very impressive season and deep run in the NHL bubble.
Things are much different now, as these are two teams moving in exact opposite directions.
Penguins vs Flyers Game Preview
The above statement is true both in the recent past, as well as the season as a whole.
The Penguins have added a W in 10 of their last 13 games, while the Flyers are a bismal 4-9 in that same stretch, including three straight losses to a 17 win NJ Devils team leading up to tonight’s contest.
So, is there any hope for the Flyers at home tonight? Likely not. The Penguins are well above .500 in road contests this year, while the flyers sit below .500 on their home sheet of ice.
In addition, the Penguins score goals at the second-highest rate in the NHL, averaging 3.37 goals per game. This is not good news for Flyers fans, as Philadelphia will be starting Alex Lyon in net, who is yet to get a win this season and has given up 14 total goals in his last three appearances. Tonight, he carries an absolutely brutal .848 sv% and 4.20 GAA into his fourth start of the season.
Penguins vs Flyers Prediction and Best Bets
This Penguins vs Flyers game will simply come down to scoring ability, which the Flyers have seemingly had none dating all the way back to last season. The reason the Flyers were so good last year was because they were a top three team in every defensive category, while this season has been the exact opposite.
The Penguins can score, the Flyers cannot. Add it all up, with a shaky goaltender to boot, and you’ve got a Penguins victory by a wide margin.
I am comfortable putting this one in blow out territory, as I believe the Penguins can win by as many as three or five goals. Don’t be afraid to lay the -170 on the ML, as I think that is actually a favorable number given how this game will likely turn out.
I will also be taking the Penguins to cover the -1.5 puckline (+145) and to win in regulation (-115)
