Best Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups Week 7
QB Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups
CJ Stroud, Houston Texans (43.8%)
I have been talking about picking up CJ Stroud for a month now, so hopefully you are someone who listened to me and has enjoyed starting him. If not, grab him ahead of a matchup against the New York Giants.
Stroud has scored 20-plus fantasy points and three straight weeks. During this span, he has completed 71.7% of his passes for 920 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Before Monday Night Football, he ranks QB3 over this span. With his old college buddy Marvin Harrison Jr. on the team to improve the receiving corps as well, Stroud looks like someone to pick up and start for the rest of the season.
Tanner McKee, Philadelphia Eagles (2.6%)
I wanted to write up Tanner McKee, since he is a deep-league option that I think you can pick up and feel okay about. While I may like Aaron Rodgers more this week, McKee is a fantasy pickup who could develop into a long-term answer for you. Again, I am mostly speaking about deep fantasy leagues or 2QB leagues.
In his first start, the Philadelphia Eagles let him drop back and throw it 45 times. While this resulted in just 215 yards and a touchdown, McKee should start to settle in a bit more with more experience, and the matchups ahead present him with the opportunity to really thrive.
This week, McKee and the Eagles will face a struggling Dallas Cowboys defense that has let several quarterbacks embarrass them this season. After that, Tanner McKee will face a terrible Washington Commanders team and the New York Giants before a bye week. These could be confidence-boosting matchups for the young quarterback that could present him with good film to review during the bye week. It’s easy to see how the start could align for him to become a Tyler Shough-like fantasy quarterback. He’s worth a speculative add to be sure.
Other Fantasy QBs to Consider:
- Aaron Rodgers
- JJ McCarthy
- Geno Smith
RB Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups
Jordan Mason, Minnesota Vikings (50.5%)
The Minnesota Vikings come off their bye week getting a little healthier, with Jordan Mason expected to be activated. He missed the past four games with a thumb injury, and he should resume the RB1A role in Minnesota’s backfield. His 50.5% ownership technically is above the 50% line I like to draw for this article, but given the combination of an injury and his bye week, I want to highlight that you should see if he is available in your league.
In Week 1, Mason totaled 15 carries in the game, which included four red zone carries. He’s clearly Minnesota’s early-down and short-yardage running game, giving him the most fantasy potential when both he and Aaron Jones are both healthy. Jordan Mason is the one who has the greater chance to score a touchdown.
So, if someone dropped him in your league, pick Jordan Mason up off the fantasy football waiver wire ahead of matchups against the Colts, Lions, Bills and Packers. The Vikings have the sixth-easiest RB fantasy football strength of schedule for the rest of the season.
Tyrone Tracey Jr., New York Giants (1.7%)
The Giants have no clue what they want to do at running back. However, Tyrone Tracy Jr. has taken over the no-huddle, passing-down role once again. He saw a team-high six carries in the game, and he was able to run for a touchdown. Tracy caught two passes and scored another touchdown through the air as well.
John Harbaugh said the team wants to find someone to emerge in this backfield, and Tracy’s multi-touchdown day could go a long way in earning him the largest role. If anyone says they know what is happening in this backfield with certainty, they are a liar. However, if there’s one play to chase for a spot start this upcoming week, I would go with the guy who found the end zone. It is also possible the Giants play from behind against the Texans, and this should be a positive game script for Tyrone Tracy Jr., so pick him up off the fantasy football waiver wire.
Other Fantasy RBs to Consider:
- Roschon Johnson
- Dylan Sampson
- Emmett Johnson
WR Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups
Germie Bernard, Pittsburgh Steelers (44.4%)
It’s clear that Germie Bernard is the priority Week 7 fantasy football waiver wire pickup, if he’s available in your league. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ receiving corps is depleted with injuries, with both Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson out a few more weeks. The rookie is taking advantage of the increased opportunity, and he’s playing well enough that he should be relevant even when the full group is healthy.
Operating as the WR2 last week, Bernard ran 54-of-56 routes. This led to 11 receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown against Tampa Bay, which isn’t an easy matchup. The matchup is easier this week against a New Orleans Saints defense that has surrendered the sixth-most yards per play (5.8) and the seventh-most yards per pass attempt (7.7).
Aaron Rodgers will be able to throw the ball in this one, and Germie Bernard will be one of his top options.
Jordyn Tyson, New Orleans Saints (32.4%)
Jordyn Tyson traveled with the New Orleans Saints to Paris for their international game. Typically, injured players with no chance of playing do not travel with the team. That can be true for typical road games but especially with international flights. While I still don’t expect him to play this week, this move suggests the rookie is close to making his NFL debut.
Tyson is the most talented rookie receiver in this class, and he has a perfect opportunity to showcase his talent. The Saints are a bad team that will be trailing often, so we can expect Tyler Shough to throw the ball a ton. Of course, that’s what Kellen Moore wants to do anyway. Chris Olave draws the defensive attention his way while the big-bodied Juwan Johnson demands attention in the middle of the field as well. This will help Jordyn Tyson draw one-on-one coverage often, and he has the ability to embarrass defenders once he’s healthy.
There are other wide receivers you could pick up off the fantasy football waiver wire that you may be able to start this week or next week. However, you rarely get the opportunity to pick up a true starter or league-winning type of player, and Tyson will be given the opportunity to be exactly that.
Other Fantasy WRs to Consider:
- Malik Washington
- Omar Cooper Jr.
- Keenan Allen
TE Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups
Chig Okonkwo, Washington Commanders (3.6%)
Jayden Daniels has really enjoyed throwing to the tight end position in his young career. Zach Ertz is no longer on the team, and that’s because Washington signed Chig Okonkwo to fill the role and add more athleticism to the position. He has battled injuries over the early part of the season, but he and Daniels are finally healthy at the same time, and Okonkwo will now be relied on more following the Terry McLaurin injury.
I’m writing this before we have concrete news on McLaurin, but it certainly looks like he is out for the rest of the season. Regardless, he will miss time, and Okonkwo will fill the role as the second-best receiving option, behind veteran Stefon Diggs. Chig Okonkwo thrived on Monday Night Football, catching seven passes for 69 yards (both team-highs). This is certainly a sign of more things to come from the Daniels-Okonkwo connection.
Of course, they have a Week 7 bye week, so this is not a fantasy football waiver wire pickup to make if you are needing someone to play this week.
Michael Mayer, Las Vegas Raiders (14.9%)
I continue to beat the Michael Mayer drum in articles and on our fantasy football YouTube channel (please subscribe). Brock Bowers plays the role of the Las Vegas Raiders’ WR1. This isn’t me saying he is the top option; Bowers lines up at wide receiver. This means Michael Mayer is the Raiders’ TE1, serving as the every-down tight end for Las Vegas.
The Raiders’ most talented receivers are both of their tight ends. So, if a team like the Bills wants to take away Bowers, targets will flow Mayer’s way. This is what we saw on Sunday, with him totaling seven receptions for 95 yards. Mayer now ranks as fantasy TE10 this season, yet he is owned in under 15% of ESPN Fantasy leagues. Check to see if he’s available in yours.
Other Fantasy TEs to Consider:
- Hunter Henry
- Brenton Strange
- Greg Dulcich
DST Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups
Cleveland Browns (34.1%)
Of the defenses that you can grab off the Week 7 fantasy football waiver wire, your best streaming option this week will be the Cleveland Browns. While the Tennessee Titans are coming off their first win of the season, that was more a product of the Indianapolis Colts than the Titans themselves. Cam Ward has thrown just four touchdowns to four interceptions this season, so the opportunity for a solid performance from Cleveland’s DST is high this week.
The Browns’ defense has been solid for fantasy, scoring double-digit fantasy points in back-to-back weeks. They have also totaled at least three sacks in five straight games. Look for them to get after Cam Ward this week and make the Titans’ offense inefficient. Check out the FlurrySports Playbook to see where they rank in my waiver wire rankings!
