In terms of injuries and those out with a bye, the tight end position seems to be the least affected. However, unless you have a clear top option, there are always questions about what TE should be in your starting lineup. I hope to answer some of your questions below with the Week 5 TE Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em!
Look, I am not here to tell you that Trey McBride or Tyler Warren are worthy of starts. Hell, we’ll leave that type of analysis to the Fantasy Football Counselor or some other hack. Instead, we will look at the players who potentially may or may not be a TE1, depending on their weekly matchup.
Now, labeling a player as a “sit” does not mean they are a must-sit player. As always, check out our weekly fantasy football rankings here. You can also become a member to join a group chat with Zach Brunner and other members where all fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em questions are welcome!

Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 5 TEs
Start: Mike Gesicki Fantasy Outlook at Dolphins
We’ll kick off our Week 5 Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em with a player in a revenge spot! You know how much I love those.
Mike Gesicki was a second-round pick by the Miami Dolphins, before he left for greener pastures. He has faced the Dolphins just once as a member of the Bengals, finishing that game with three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown. This week, he has the potential for a much higher receiving total.
As I have mentioned a couple of times this season already, Gesicki can be treated as a handcuff to either Ja’Marr Chase or Tee Higgins. If either player is inactive, Gesicki should play a relevant role. Well, Chase is expected to miss this game with a concussion, and Higgins is banged up as well. As a result, Gesicki will be one of Joe Burrow’s top receiving weapons against a terrible defense.
We saw the Dolphins give up 13 catches for 119 yards to TJ Hockenson last week. It’s very possible they struggle to cover Gesicki this week as well. Regardless, Mike Gesicki has a 25% goal-line share for the Bengals and has caught three touchdowns this season. Betting on him to score a touchdown in this revenge spot looks to be wise.

Start: TJ Hockenson Fantasy Outlook at Saints
It’s clear Kyler Murray has good chemistry with TJ Hockenson so far. Yes, Justin Jefferson missed last week’s game, but Hockenson’s target share is impressive, and Jefferson could be out again in Week 5. In fact, Hockenson has a 33.3% target share with Murray this season, and he now has a great matchup with the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to TEs this season, and they also allow the most red zone trips, at 4.8 per game. Teams are moving up and down the field on this defense, and if the Vikings find themselves in the red zone often, TJ Hockenson has strong touchdown upside. He leads the team with five red zone targets, and his usage will increase if Justin Jefferson is help out once again.
Sit: Kyle Pitts Fantasy Outlook vs Ravens
Kyle Pitts is coming off his best game of the season… and it resulted in a TE24 finish. Yes, it was his first game this season with multiple receptions, but that’s where we are with Kyle Pitts. The bar is low, and if you think you won’t be able to trade him, then he is fully droppable.
If you use the new Field General tool at the FlurrySports Playbook, you can see how players’ usage and performance are impacted by teammates being on or off the field. He has not been great with Michael Penix Jr., dating back to last season. With Penix, Pitts averages 2.35 fewer fantasy points and nearly nine fewer receiving yards.
Pitts faces a solid Baltimore Ravens defense that allows the 12th-fewest fantasy points to TEs. This is a strong ranking considering they have played Tyler Warren, Juwan Johnson and Jake Ferguson this season. Could Kyle Pitts have a good performance this season? Sure, but you won’t be able to predict it. Sit Pitts, try to trade him, and drop him if you need the roster spot.
Sit: Dalton Schultz Fantasy Outlook at Titans
It is clear that you should play Dalton Schultz when Nico Collins doesn’t play; then you should sit him when Collins is in the lineup. Dating back to last season, when Nico Collins doesn’t play, Schultz has averaged 19.5 more yards per game. You can see these usage differences on my new Field General tool! After last week’s nine-yard performance, you shouldn’t be holding out hope for a bounce-back. In fact, you don’t need to hold him on your team at all.
The Titans’ defense is an underrated unit overall, and they have played well against the tight end position as well. While they have allowed the 11th-fewest fantasy points to TEs, they have faced four teams who use the position often: Jets, Eagles, Giants, Ravens. The matchup’s 37.5 projected total is the lowest of the week, and there isn’t much fantasy goodness to find here.
