The running back position continues to take hit after hit. De’Von Achane, Breece Hall, Saquon Barkley and several other RBs have suffered injuries, creating some really tough Week 5 RB Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em decisions for you. Luckily, I’m here to help!
For my fantasy start/sit, we will discuss players who are on the fringe of your lineup. Players who may or may not be an RB2 or Flex for you, depending on the matchup. Now, labeling a player as a “sit” does not mean they are a must-sit player. As always, check out our weekly fantasy football rankings here.

Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 5 RBs
Start: Aaron Jones Fantasy Outlook at Saints
Because he is one of my favorite players in the league, I’m making Aaron Jones my featured RB in the Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em for back-to-back weeks. Oh, he also has a damn good matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
Per my Opportunity Index, Jones has seen 24.7 looks per game over the past three weeks. This is tied for the third-most among RBs with Jahmyr Gibbs! He is also averaging 0.54 fantasy points per touch over this time, which is more than Ashton Jeanty. His workload has been absolutely massive without Jordan Mason, and he will continue to see a ton of touches in Week 5 against the Saints.
The Saints are allowing the most fantasy points to RBs this season, giving up 554 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground to the position already. New Orleans is also allowing 4.8 red zone trips per game to their opponents, which is also by far the most in the NFL. All of this data and more can be found in the FlurrySports Playbook for free, so you really should check that site out.
Aaron Jones should see plenty of work both on the ground and as a receiver, so fire him up with confidence as your RB2.
Start: Braelon Allen Fantasy Outlook vs Browns
We touted Braelon Allen as a good play last week, and that ended up falling flat due to the number of plays the Jets were able to run. The Jets ran just 39 plays, but Allen touched the ball on 16 of those plays, including all 14 of the team’s running plays. Totaling 67 yards isn’t terrible, and clearly his upside is very high when the Jets run more than just 39 plays.
The Browns allow 4.6 yards per carry, which is the ninth-most in the NFL. The Jets will be able to move the ball, and more importantly, their defense will have an easier time getting off the field this weekend. Given his workload, lock Braelon Allen into your starting fantasy football lineup.

Sit: Alvin Kamara Fantasy Outlook vs Vikings
Last week, Alvin Kamara scored two touchdowns while also easily crushing his receiving props. Those were free money. But still, it was a bad fantasy performance without the touchdowns, and it’ll be tough for him to find pay dirt against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5.
The Vikings are allowing the fewest fantasy points to RBs, at 14.2 in PPR scoring. They have allowed just one touchdown to the position this season, and it is highly unlikely that Kamara raises that total in this matchup. Kamara only has a 15% goal-line share this season. So, even if the Saints make it to the red zone, Kamara’s usage isn’t high enough to trust he falls in the end zone. Without a touchdown, he will struggle to return Flex value.
Sit: David Montgomery Fantasy Outlook at Titans
The season started hot for David Montgomery, scoring three touchdowns in Week 1. Since then, it has been all doom and gloom for Montgomery fantasy owners. He has failed to rank in the top 30 among running backs and has not found the end zone again. Against the Tennessee Titans, in the game with the lowest projected total of the weekend, Montgomery has little upside yet again.
The Titans allow 3.7 yards per carry, which is the eighth-fewest in the league. It will be another inefficient day for Montgomery, and Houston will likely have few trips to the red zone.
