Unlike most other groups in the FIFA World Cup 2026, there is really only one storyline here: can Germany finally break through to the knockout stages again? Since finishing in the top three in four consecutive World Cups, punctuated by winning the tournament in 2014, the Germans have failed to qualify out of the group stage in two straight competitions.
While tough groupings could be partially blamed for their past failures, they should be able to breeze through the knockout stages in a group that contains no other teams in the top 20 of FIFA’s Men’s Rankings. Assuming the Germans can deal with their demons from the past, the door is wide open for the second qualifying spot from World Cup Group E.

Prediction
With all due respect to Curacao, they are very clearly the odd man out in World Cup Group E. For Curacao to qualify, even as one of the highest-ranked third-placed teams, they’d have to be on the lucky end of some historic results. As for the other three teams, it becomes murkier. Germany is the team that likely stands out, but they are also the biggest underachievers in this group when looking at recent results. Since finishing on the podium in four straight FIFA World Cup tournaments, capped as champions in 2014, the Germans have failed to make it out of the group stage in two straight competitions. As for the Ivory Coast and Ecuador, both teams have some really dangerous players and have overachieved in their past few tournaments.
Ivory Coast is a pretty underrated team on paper, given that they won the African Cup of Nations back in 2023 and made the quarterfinals in 2025. While they’ve never made it out of the group stage at the World Cup before, they found themselves in a group with Argentina and Netherlands in 2006 and Brazil and Portugal in 2010 when only the top two teams qualified for the knockout stages. It’s hardly their fault they were grouped with such giants. As for Ecuador, they made the group stage in 2006 but have since also fallen victim to tough draws in their last two appearances.
It would be hard to bet against Germany to take the top spot, but I truly believe this group sees three teams qualify for the next round. Ivory Coast is not far behind Ecuador on paper, but star forward Amad has been in a bad run of form as of late at Manchester United. It’s hard to imagine he can find that quickly enough to top Ecuador in the group, so I see Ecuador taking second place in the grouping, with Curacao needing to be lucky to be able to capture a point in this group.
