With the 108th pick in the NFL, the Denver Broncos selected Washington’s Jonah Coleman to join what on paper looks like a loaded backfield. While at Washington, Coleman wowed football fans as he finished his 758-yard, 15-touchdown season with a great introduction to the NFL.

Coleman now joins a backfield that is already comprised of JK Dobbins, RJ Harvey (gotta think Denver might have second thoughts not drafting a running back with initials as his first name) and Jaleel McLaughlin. Even with Harvey finishing the season looking like the future, Denver found it necessary to select Coleman in the fourth round, meaning that the Jonah Coleman dynasty fantasy football value is one to monitor.

While he was a promising prospect entering the draft, a crowded backfield does complicate matters. Where should you draft Jonah Coleman in dynasty fantasy football rookie drafts? We will take a closer look below, and you can also see where he is ranked in our dynasty fantasy football rookie rankings!

Jonah Coleman Dynasty Fantasy Football Projection

Year 1 Value For Jonah Coleman Fantasy Owners

While Coleman’s landing in Denver does not seem like the most ideal spot for a running back, the nice thing is the system he enters. Sean Payton is known for running multiple running back sets throughout his time in the NFL. Going back to New Orleans, Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory were all fantasy-viable options at some point when they were all in the backfield. Even in Denver last season, Harvey, Dobbins and McLaughlin all held some fantasy value at some point during the season. This current Denver backfield feels like it is shaping up to be something similar this season.

At this point in his career, it appears likely that Dobbins will miss time with an injury, meaning every player in that Broncos backfield moves up a spot on the depth chart. If we all agree that Dobbins will miss some time, that means that an injury or poor performance from Harvey immediately boosts Coleman to a featured role.

Even without the injuries, Coleman’s skillset is a great complement to Harvey, as the Washington alum runs very physically, meaning goal-line touches can be ceded to him. With that being said, there is an opportunity for immediate playing time for Coleman, something that not every other projected first-round pick in dynasty rookie drafts can offer.

Jonah Coleman Dynasty Fantasy Football Value

As I stated before, the Jonah Coleman dynasty value really coincides with Harvey and Dobbins’ health, but make no mistake, if those two are healthy, that does not mean Coleman is going to give you zeros. Given his ability to handle a strong workload, Coleman will start the season as Denver’s RB3 at worst. Coleman’s role will continue to climb in the offense, as Dobbins, who has a potential out in his contract after this season, is likely to be phased out of the offense sooner rather than later. Once Dobbins is gone, Coleman and Harvey will produce a strong running back duo, something similar to what we saw from Ken Walker/Zach Charbonnet. With Bo Nix’s injury in the playoffs last season, it is not crazy to think that Denver is looking to limit his rushing opportunities to avoid another injury to the future of the franchise.

That means that Coleman has a great shot to earn more carries for future seasons. Given that Harvey was only able to produce 3.7 yards per carry last season, if Coleman can be a spark plug early for Denver, that role might grow into something major come his second and third seasons in the NFL. At a baseline, Coleman has a (relatively) very safe floor, as he will be involved early in his career, and his ceiling, while maybe never that of a Bijan Robinson or Derrick Henry-type player, could be something like we saw with Mark Ingram in both New Orleans.

Where to Draft Jonah Coleman in Dynasty Rookie Drafts

As always, I need to preface that you should always look at what you need on your team and weigh that with what you think that player’s fantasy value is. So basically speaking, if you need a running back and you are sitting at the 1.04, taking a player like Jadarian Price or Jonah Coleman ahead of guys like Fernando Mendoza or Makai Lemon is not a crazy thing to do.

With that being said, in a vacuum, Coleman should not be drafted any later than 1.10 in rookie drafts. When comparing him to Price, Jadarian Price’s ceiling is probably higher right away, but Coleman’s floor is higher. Seattle will likely add a veteran, who will take a majority of the carries until Charbonnet comes back, before just handing the job to Price.

While some people are not as high on Coleman as I am, if you are in desperate need of running back help right now, taking him as high as 1.04 is not the craziest thing ever thought. That means you need to be drafting Coleman as a mid-first round pick in your rookie dynasty drafts.
