Malachi Fields Scouting Report
Strengths
Malachi Fields combines elite strength and size at the wide receiver position, making him a true X receiver. He is able to use his size to win contested catches, and he has quite the highlight reel, making circus catches as well. Smaller defenders struggle to bring him down, as he plays with a physicality that will expose some people. Playing on a run-heavy offense at Notre Dame, Fields has also shown the mentality to be a willing blocker.
Weaknesses
As we see with many big, athletic outside receivers, sometimes their coaches get a bit lazy in developing them. Fields needs work developing his route tree. His quickness is also below average. What I mean by that is that he will have a tough time creating separation in close quarters, and his acceleration off the snap isn’t at the level to blow by defenders quickly.
If you have followed draft coverage over the past several seasons, you know that wide receivers who struggle to separate in college really bother me. Less than half of college corners have any clue what they are doing, and everyone in the NFL is bigger, faster and stronger. If you cannot separate in college, it doesn’t get easier in the NFL.
