Best WNBA Betting Futures Picks to Win the 2022 Championship

Las Vegas Aces (+175)

The Las Vegas Aces franchise has reached the WNBA Finals twice in its history. One came all the way back in 2008 when they were still based in San Antonio as the Silver Stars. Much more recently, the Aces were swept in The Finals by Seattle in 2020. When the Las Vegas front office went out and hired Becky Hammon to be the team’s new head coach last offseason, the hope was that her own playing experience and tremendous coaching resume would help put the franchise over the top with regard to winning a championship.

The Aces enter the playoffs as the WNBA betting futures favorite to win this year’s title. Perhaps, this is only fitting given that Las Vegas is the 1-seed in the playoff bracket. The Aces raced out to a terrific start before encountering a mid-summer slump of sorts. Despite this, they were still able to track down Chicago and reclaim the top spot in the standings.

Can Star Power Carry Aces to a Title?

One of the old adages in sports is that “defense wins championships”. Well, the Aces are about to put that belief to the test in a big way in the 2022 WNBA Playoffs. All season long, Las Vegas has been head and shoulders above the rest of the league when it comes to offensive production. The Aces boast a trio of former No. 1 overall picks in Kelsey Plum, A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young. All three players averaged well over 15 points per game this season.

Along with the aforementioned “Big Three”, point guard Chelsea Gray figures to be a key part of any championship run Las Vegas puts together. The Aces will have to begin the playoffs with Dearica Hamby. Luckily, reserve center Kiah Stokes filled in admirably late in the regular season.

Although the Aces lack the same caliber of bench depth as some other WNBA betting contenders, they have more star power than any other team. Talent often wins out at the end of the day, making the Aces worthy of consideration for a championship futures bet.

Connecticut Sun (+375)

The Connecticut Sun have made it to the WNBA Finals three times in their history. The most recent appearance came back in 2019. Unfortunately, just like the team’s first two trips over a decade prior, the Sun came up short three years ago, falling to Washington in five games. By virtue of being the 3-seed in the 2022 WNBA Playoffs, Connecticut could very well have the opportunity to exact some revenge on Chicago in a rematch of last year’s playoff semifinal series.

Although the Sun finished third in the final regular season standings, they were also within a single game of the top-seeded Aces. Thus, one could make a legitimate case for any of the top three teams to be worthy of strong consideration when making WNBA betting futures picks. Of the three, the Sun’s odds of nearly 4-1 certainly offer the greatest return on investment. Not too shabby at all for a team that spent a couple of weeks atop the standings.

Sun Possess Championship-Caliber Roster Depth and Experience

One thing that really sets the Sun apart from most other teams in the 2022 WNBA Playoffs is the depth and versatility of their roster. Offensively, not a single Connecticut player averaged 15 points per game over the full season. However, four different players scored more than 13 per contest. With so many capable scorers, it’s no wonder that the Sun ranked second only to Las Vegas in overall offensive rating.

The two primary stars of the show in Uncasville this season have been Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas. The former came within 1.5 rebounds of averaging a double-double for the year. Meanwhile, Thomas made some history on a league-wide scale when she became just the third player in history to record multiple tiple-doubles. In addition to Jones and Thomas, Connecticut has been able to rely on both DeWanna Bonner and Brionna Jones for stable offensive production throughout the season.

Defensively, guard Courtney Williams is one of the scrappiest players in the league today and serves as a sparkplug for her team. Connecticut’s size and length are also extremely important at that end of the floor. Just like they did for offensive rating, the Sun ranked second in overall defensive rating this season. The ability to get it done at both ends of the floor cannot be understated when considering WNBA betting futures picks.

Seattle Storm (+700)

Historically, the Seattle Storm have a much better track record when they reach The Finals than the other two WNBA betting futures picks on this list. Seatle has appeared in the WNBA Finals four times in franchise history. Each time, the Storm walked away as league champions. This includes two titles in the last four years as the Storm pulled off series sweeps of both Washington in 2018 and Las Vegas in 2020.

The Storm will enter the 2022 WNBA Playoffs as the 4-seed. As a result, there is the likely hurdle of needing to overcome the Aces in the Semifinal Round. That’s assuming that Seattle manages to get past Washington in their First Round series. The Storm sputtered to a 1-3 start to begin the regular season, and did encounter other slumps over the course of the summer. While they may not be as dominant as in previous seasons, the Storm still have one of the best players in the league on the roster. Her presence alone makes Seattle impossible to count out in the WNBA betting championship futures odds.

Storm’s Title Hopes Ride on Superstar Breanna Stewart

Breanna Stewart led all WNBA players in scoring with an average of 21.8 points per game during the regular season. She is the focal point of this Storm roster and will need to shoulder the load offensively if Seattle is to make another WNBA Finals run. Other than Jewell Lloyd, no other Storm player averaged more than 12.6 points per game this season. The fact that it was mid-season acquisition, Tina Charles, who was the one responsible for that figure serves as a clear indication of just how important her presence was in the latter half of the year.

What the Storm have lacked in offensive explosion this season, they have typically made up for it on the defensive end. Seattle held opponents to just 78.4 points per game this season, good for the third-best scoring defense in the league. They also ranked third in overall defensive rating. Despite lacking dependable scorers, the Storm were one of the league’s best in terms of effective field goal and true shooting percentages.

One also must consider underlying factors when making WNBA betting futures picks. For the Storm, these include the franchise’s winning pedigree and the fact that this is Sue Bird’s swansong season.
