I think that Pittsburgh’s last win over Iowa State was a testimate to the poor game that the Cyclones played, as opposed to how good Pittsburgh played. In that game though, Pittsburgh’s defense made life very difficult for Iowa State at times. Xavier was another team that struggled throughout the entire game in their first-round matchup against Kennesaw State. The offense did not look the eighth-ranked offense in the country in that game. Xavier has shown all season that they can score the ball and I don’t think one bad game should have too big of an effect on this team. Pittsburgh struggled on the defensive side of the ball at times this season, proved by their 108 ranking in KenPom for defense efficiency.
Xavier is a better team than Pittsburgh, so seeing that Xavier plays at such a higher pace, one has to believe that Xavier will control the flow of this game. If that is the case, Pittsburgh could find itself down early. Pittsburgh has proved time and time again though that they can stay in games and cover the spread. I like that here, as Xavier is clearly the better team, but Pittsburgh has found some sort of success on the defensive side of the ball.
