We are just three days away from the conclusion of the WNBA regular season. Despite this, only six of the league’s eight postseason tickets have been punched thus far. Entering Friday’s four-game slate, a quartet of teams all sit tied in the standings with only two spots available. It just so happens that all four of those squads will be in action on Friday night, including the Phoenix Mercury who will host the Dallas Wings. The WNBA betting odds are projecting a close contest between the two sides. The market is currently tilted towards the visitors for tonight’s Wings vs Mercury prediction.

Wings vs Mercury WNBA Betting Game Preview

Dallas Wings Preview

After struggling to maintain consistency throughout the majority of the WNBA betting season, the Wings got hot at the right time. Earlier this week, Dallas parlayed a five-game winning streak that dated back to the end of July into a playoff berth. The Wings clinched their spot by beating New York at home on Monday night. Although the winning streak came to an end just two days later, the Wings are assured of being the 6-seed and can focus on the upcoming postseason.

Unfortunately for Dallas, there is a very high likelihood that they will have to embark on the WNBA Playoffs without their leading scorer. Earlier this week, it was announced that Arike Ogunbowale will be sidelined for the next couple of weeks with a hip injury. The fact that Ogunbowale also missed time last week with a different ailment made the Wings’ five-game winning streak that much more impressive. Marina Mabrey and Teaira McCowan have stepped up as the offensive leaders in her absence.

Phoenix Mercury Preview

A lot will be riding on tonight’s game for the Mercury after they dropped their most recent contest to fellow playoff hopeful Minnesota. Overall, Phoenix has only won once in its last four games played. The Merc have struggled mightily on the road all throughout the WNBA betting season. However, they have actually posted a 10-6 record playing at home. Despite the team’s success at the Footprint Center, the betting public is going against them in a big way with tonight’s consensus Wings vs Mercury prediction. Undoubtedly, a depleted lineup is one of the primary reasons for this trend.

The 2022 WNBA season has been filled with roster turmoil and off-court distractions for the Mercury. Center Brittney Griner has missed the entire season due to her legal issues in Russia. For a while, Phoenix relied on Tina Charles to hold down the fort in the frontcourt. Eventually, she was released and signed with Seattle. The Mercury’s strength at that point became their backcourt tandem of Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith. Well, within the past week, both players have been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season. Taurasi is dealing with an injury and Diggins-Smith will be absent due to personal reasons.

Wings vs Mercury Stats

  • Dallas is averaging 82.2 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 5 in the WNBA).
  • Dallas is surrendering 82.5 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 7 in the WNBA).
  • Phoenix is averaging 81.4 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 7 in the WNBA).
  • Phoenix is surrendering 84.5 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 10 in the WNBA).

Wings vs Mercury Prediction

To say that the Mercury are up against it in their pursuit of a playoff spot would be an understatement. Including the departed Tina Charles, the absences of Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith mean that Phoenix is now without each of its top three scorers this season. Not only that, but all three players averaged over 16.5 points per game this season for the Mercury.

As the lineup has gradually been thinned out, the drop-off in offensive production has been very real. The Mercury come into Friday’s game having fallen short of the 80-point threshold in five straight games. Three of those contests saw them fail to reach the 70-point mark as well. The onus will primarily fall on Diamond DeShields and Sophie Cunningham to carry the offense in the final two regular season games.

On the bright side, the Mercury do get the benefit of playing a sub-par defensive team in Dallas. In fact, the Wings and Merc come into Friday’s WNBA betting matchup ranked just ninth and tenth in overall defensive rating, respectively. Despite this, the absence of so much offensive production on both sides has seen the total crash from an opening line of 165.5 to the current offering of 159.

Aside from the most recent head-to-head meeting which saw both teams have an awful shooting game, the Wings and Mercury flew over this WNBA betting total in their other two encounters this season. Granted, those were far more complete rosters, but it also takes some iffy defensive play to combine for 178 and 181 points, respectively. Both teams still have enough quality talent to capitalize on one another’s defensive woes and push tonight’s game over the total.

Wings vs Mercury Prediction: Over 159 (-110 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
