Game 2: What’s at Stake

After a thrilling Game 1 in Calgary, the United States holds a 1–0 edge in the two-game Prospects Challenge. A win by Team CHL on Wednesday night in Lethbridge would even the series at one game apiece — setting up a dramatic 20-minute, 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime immediately after Game 2 to determine the overall champion.

This unique format ensures the series delivers a decisive winner, adding extra intensity to an already tightly contested matchup.

Recap: USA Takes Game 1

Team USA struck first in Calgary with a 4–2 victory powered by standout goaltending from Brady Knowling, who stopped an incredible 42 of 44 shots. The 6-foot-5 netminder turned aside wave after wave of CHL pressure, proving to be the difference-maker in the opener.

The Americans built early momentum with goals from:

  • Dayne Beuker (1st period)

  • Sammy Nelson (early 2nd period)

Team CHL clawed back with a second-period goal from Soo Greyhounds defender Chase Reid, but the U.S. restored its two-goal lead when Wyatt Cullen scored early in the third. Spokane Chiefs forward Mathis Preston cut the lead to 3–2, but an empty-netter from Jamie Glance sealed the victory.

Team CHL captain Caleb Malhotra admitted afterward:
“We were too casual going in… Nobody in there put their best foot forward. We’re going to come back better tomorrow.”

Event Format

The 2025 CHL USA Prospects Challenge uses a unique, high-intensity competition format designed to guarantee a decisive result while showcasing elite junior talent. Here’s how the series works:

  • Two Points for a Win
Every victory—whether in regulation, overtime, or a shootout—is worth two points. There are no points awarded for a loss, regardless of how the game ends.

  • Overtime if Tied After Regulation
If the score is tied after 60 minutes, teams will play a five-minute, three-on-three, sudden-death overtime period. The first goal wins the game.

  • Shootout if Still Tied
If overtime solves nothing, the game moves to a three-player shootout for each team.

    • If still tied after three shooters, the shootout continues in sudden-death, with new players participating until a winner is decided.

    • Only the winning team earns two points; the losing team receives none.

  • Series Tied After Two Games?
If both teams finish with two points each, a special “third game” tiebreaker is played immediately after Game 2.

    • The ice is flooded, teams switch ends, and then play a three-on-three, 20-minute sudden-death period (or multiple periods if needed).

    • The first goal wins the series.
