Canelo Alvarez, widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, is set to defend his undisputed status against light middleweight four-belt champion Jermell Charlo this weekend.
Charlo is stepping up two weight classes for his biggest fight, scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the second home of the Mexican boxer.

Canelo vs. Charlo fight preview
Canelo Alvarez is the undisputed super middleweight champion, while Charlo is the undisputed super welterweight champion. This fight marks the first undisputed vs. undisputed bout in boxing’s four-belt era (for men).
Charlo made his professional debut in 2007. He defeated John Jackson in 2016 for the WBC super welterweight title, and after losing the title to Tony Harrison in 2018, Charlo won it back a year later.
In 2020, he beat Jeison Rosario for the WBA, IBF, and The Ring super welterweight titles. Next year, he faced Castano to become undisputed, fighting to a draw.
He earned undisputed status at 154 lbs when he last fought and won a TKO over Brian Castano in May 2022. He was slated to face Tim Tszyu in January but was forced out of the bout due to a broken left hand, which required surgery.
That said, the American boxer is coming to the fight unbeaten in his last five fights since losing a decision to Tony Harrison in 2019.
Moreover, there are concerns over American boxer’s performance as well. Will he be slower? Will he hit as hard? Will he be able to take the Mexican opponent’s best punch? Will he still be light on his feet? And most importantly, will he fully trust his surgically repaired left hand?
Four-division champion Canelo turned pro in 2005 and has defeated several of the sport’s best, including Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, and Gennadiy Golovkin.
In less than a year, the Mexican boxer became the undisputed super middleweight champion, defeating Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant.
In May 2022, he lost to Dmitry Bivol and failed to capture light heavyweight gold for the second time. That was his first defeat since 2013 against Floyd Mayweather, ending a 16-fight unbeaten streak.
Canelo bounced back by defeating Golovkin in a trilogy bout. After wrist surgery, Canelo returned in May, defeating John Ryder and retaining his titles.
Alvarez has been vulnerable defensively in his recent fights, and because of this, there are specific questions regarding Mexican’s game, ‘is he on the decline?’. His last three fights (a loss and two victories) came from close decisions, not what boxing fans are used to seeing from him.
Comparing both, Alvarez is a skilled, bigger, and stronger fighter with a reach advantage. He has a good job and a variety of punches in his arsenal.
On the other hand, Charlo is the more explosive fighter, with devastating knockout power. He is undoubtedly an excellent boxer but not as skillful or experienced as Alvarez.
Canelo vs. Charlo Undercard Preview
On the PPV undercard, several highly-anticipated fights are scheduled. Erickson Lubin and Jesus Ramos will take on each other for 12 12-round super welterweight bout.
Ramos is unbeaten in 20 bouts and will participate in the fourth PBC PPV undercard in a row. Lubin lost to Sebastian Fundora in April 2022 for the interim WBC title but defeated Luis Arias in June.
Armando Resendiz and Elijah Garcia are also set to face each other in a middleweight bout. Both men fought earlier this year on Mark Magsayo vs. Brandon Figueroa undercard in separate bouts.
Garcia is unbeaten since 2020 in 15 bouts, while Resendiz hasn’t fought since beating Jarrett Hurd in March.
Yordenis Ugas and Mario Barrios will battle for the interim WBC Welterweight title in a 12-round bout on the main card. Former WBA(Super) Welterweight Champion Ugas lost to Errol Spence Jr. in his last fight in April 2022.
Meanwhile, his opponent, former super lightweight champion, lost to Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman before defeating Jovanie Santiago to win the WBC Continental Americas welterweight title earlier this year.
