These Super Bowl records could be broken in 2026.
As Super Bowl LX nears, it feels like unfamiliar territory. We aren’t watching Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs out of the AFC or San Francisco or Philadelphia out of the NFC. Over recent Super Bowl matchups, we had an idea of what was going to happen in the game. Now with the Seahawks and Patriots matching up, there is a lot of unknown. There aren’t many household names on either of these teams, which brings about some intrigue.
While we don’t have the Travis Kelces or Saquon Barkleys of the world playing in this game, there are some opportunities for lesser-known players to etch their names into the record books. The following article contains my predictions for five Super Bowl records that could be broken this season.
Predicting Super Bowl Records Broken in 2026
Least Combined Points Scored in a Super Bowl (16)
Let’s start this article off with a Super Bowl record that nobody should be rooting for. Throughout the NFL season, the two best defenses in the NFL have been the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. Seattle ranked first this season in points given up per game, at 17.1, while New England ranked second, at 17.3. With Sam Darnold, who has struggled at times throughout his career, and Drake Maye, who is still very young and relatively inexperienced, it is not too crazy to think that the offenses in the game may struggle to move the ball. Add to the fact that both teams are led by coaches who have no problem winning ugly, and all of a sudden this looks like one of the Super Bowl records that could be broken in 2026.
Both teams also recorded playoff games where they held their opponent to under 10 points — Seattle against San Francisco and New England against Los Angeles and Denver. With each team’s kicker ranking in the top half of the league this season, on top of unpredictability from both offenses, making your field goals may be the key to winning this game. If field goals are relied upon, that means there may not be much scoring. The current record for the fewest combined points in a Super Bowl is 16, when the Patriots beat the Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII.

Youngest Quarterback to Win a Super Bowl (23 years, 340 days)
The current record for the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl is held by Ben Roethlisberger, who did so at 23 years and 340 days old. As it stands, when Drake Maye takes his first snap on Sunday, he will be 23 years and 162 days old. This is probably the most likely record to be broken this year, as the only thing that needs to happen is that the Patriots must win the game. New England comes into the game as 4.5-point underdogs, so the sportsbooks expect this to be a close game. This season, New England has won eight times in games that were decided by seven points or less, meaning that New England has experience in playing close games this season.
Longest Punt Return in Super Bowl History (65 Yards)
Punt returns have always been an interesting dynamic in the Super Bowl. Given the intensity and limited number of possessions, many coaches elect to go for fourth-and-short, so the longest punt return in Super Bowl history is 65 yards from Kadarius Toney. Now we get a matchup with a few factors that could help this record be broken. The first of which is the rate at which both these teams make their opponents punt. Opponents punted 4.1 times per game against the Patriots, while opponents punted four times per game against the Seahawks. If those trends stay true, there will be eight punt return opportunities in this game.
The next factor that goes into this record being broken is who the teams have as their punt returners. New England features Marcus Jones, who finished fourth in the NFL this season in punt return yardage (363 yards). On the other side, Rashid Shaheed finished sixth in the NFL this season (339 yards). With two of the game’s most electrifying punt returners in this game, a long return is bound to happen. This also brings another record into mind — the first punt return touchdown in Super Bowl history could happen in Super Bowl LX.
Most Combined Field Goals Made in a Super Bowl (7)
As I stated before, this game has the makings to be a low-scoring slugfest. Both teams want to run the ball and beat the crap out of you on the defensive side of the ball. The run game for both teams will be at the forefront, meaning there may not be many opportunities for long touchdown plays. What works well for this record to be broken is that both have excellent red zone defense this season. Going with the theme of this article, the defenses in this game are going to be at an all-time high, leading teams to take field goals when given the opportunity and planning to win the game on the defensive side of the ball.
The Super Bowl record for most combined field goals made is seven in Super Bowl LVIII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Taking a look at the kickers in this game, Jason Myers connected on 41 attempts this season, tying for third in NFL history in most field goals made in a season. On the other side, Andy Borregales connected on 27 field goals. This proves that both teams are very comfortable settling for field goals, and given that both teams’ biggest strength is their defense, we should believe in the kickers.
Most Super Bowl Wins By a Team (6)
Much like Drake Maye becoming the youngest quarterback to win the Super Bowl, New England claiming first place by themselves in the franchise with the most Super Bowl wins is the most likely out of these five Super Bowl records to be broken. As it stands, the Patriots are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers with six Super Bowl wins. While technically they already have the record as the franchise with the most Super Bowl wins, moving into first place by themselves is a much better standing. As I said before, Seattle is favored by 4.5 points. While New England is the underdog, there appears to be a real possibility that they win this game.
Ever since Bill Belichick and Tom Brady took over the Patriots, the franchise has been far and away the most successful in the NFL. When Brady left, New England went into the biggest rebuild since the late ’80s, early ’90s. It appears that they have climbed out of that hole, as they have found their new Belichick and Brady in Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye. While we love to hate the Patriots, it would be an incredible sports story for them to come out of the dark after the dominance and reclaim their throne atop the NFL, while becoming the sole owner of first place in Super Bowl victories.
