Tennessee vs Creighton Prediction | March Madness Sweet 16 Picks
This game provides a perfect opportunity for Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes to expel some of his demons from past struggles in the NCAA Tournament. Barnes has coached some great teams over the years yet has just a 29-27 tournament record and just one Final Four appearance. Once again, he has a great defensive team and the offense is led by one of the best scorers in the country, Dalton Knecht. The Volunteers will need more from him and the offense in this game though as Tennessee shot just 33% from the field and 12% from deep.
On the other side, the Creighton Bluejays have one of the most explosive offenses in the country. Their starting lineup is widely regarded as one of, if not the best, starting lineups in the NCAA. The big issue for Creighton is their lack of depth and production from their bench. Across two games, their “Big Three” of Ryan Kalkbrenner, Baylor Scheierman, and Trey Alexander average over 44 minutes per game. While their double overtime game certainly inflates those numbers, it’s clear that they need high production and a lot of minutes out of their starters.
This will be a different challenge for both teams. Creighton’s offense and size is one Tennessee hasn’t seen before and Tennessee’s defense is likely the best Creighton’s faced all season. With the way Tennessee’s defense has played, Creighton will need to hit contested shots at a high rate, unless they can find a way to stop Knecht. If Knecht gets hot, Tennessee’s defense will be hard for the Bluejays to overcome.
