Heads or Tails? Out of the thousands of Super Bowl LVIII prop bets available for the NFL betting public to wager on, none are as straightforward as the pregame coin toss. The literal 50-50 odds of the Super Bowl coin toss landing on either heads or tails make it a difficult prop to handicap in terms of finding an edge. Nonetheless, the simplicity combined with the instant gratification result makes it one of the most popular prop wagers among the betting public on an annual basis.

Super Bowl Coin Toss Results History

Last year, those who bet the coin toss to turn up as TAILS were winners. TAILS also leads when it comes to the all-time Super Bowl coin toss results history. In the 57 previous seasons, TAILS owns a 30-27 advantage.

TAILS was able to expand its lead by winning four straight years between Super Bowls XLVIII and LI. However, HEADS had clawed back by winning four out of the last six flips heading into Super Bowl LVIII.

While TAILS may enjoy the all-time advantage, it’s certainly a slim lead at that. Expressed as a percentage, TAILS has won 52.6% of all Super Bowl coin tosses to date. This slim margin certainly suggests that the probability of the coin toss is indeed 50-50 over the long haul.

Super Bowl Coin Toss Curse

Winning the coin toss has not translated into winning the Super Bowl itself in the 58-year history of the Big Game. In 2022, the Cincinnati Bengals won the coin flip but failed to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LVI. This came just one year after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl coin toss but lost the game handily. In fact, the team to win the coin toss has lost in eight of the last nine years with the Chiefs breaking the eight-year streak last season. Talk about an interesting coin toss betting trend!

All told, only 25 teams (43.8%) who won their respective Super Bowl coin toss have gone on to win the game itself. Interestingly enough, of those 25 occurrences, 12 had a coin toss result of HEADS and 13 TAILS. Go figure!

Team-Specific Super Bowl Coin Toss History

The following sections look at the previous coin toss history for this year’s participating teams, the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs

49ers Coin Toss History

The 49ers have success both in The Big Game and in the coin toss. San Francisco is both 5-2 in the coin toss and in the Super Bowl as well. With that being said, they have lost their last two Super Bowl appearances and are 1-1 in the coin toss in those two games.

Of the seven previous 49ers Super Bowl coin toss outcomes, TAILS emerged as the winning side four times. There isn’t much of a correlation between the coin toss outcome and their Super Bowl outcome either.

Chiefs Coin Toss History

The Kansas City Chiefs have been in The Big Game five times, but have only recently seen success in the coin toss. They have won the last two coin tosses after starting out losing their first three. Their Super Bowl record is also close to .500 as they have won three of their five appearances.

Eerily enough, the Super Bowl outcome for the Chiefs has aligned with the coin toss every time. In the three instances the toss ended up TAILS, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl. In the two instances the toss ended up HEADS, the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl. It certainly isn’t an exact science, but Chiefs fans will certainly be cheering for TAILS to show up at the coin toss in Super Bowl LVIII.
