Shea Patterson Cut From USFL by the Michigan Panthers

It was a head-scratching pick on draft day, but the Michigan Panthers went with the hometown kid, selecting Shea Patterson with the first overall pick in the USFL. Patterson had his fair share of struggles with the Michigan Panthers for two years. After going undrafted, he spent some time up in Canada before being drafted to the USFL.

Now, it’s looking like his USFL stint has come to an end. In a big move, the Michigan Panthers have cut first overall draft pick Shea Patterson.

Through six weeks, Shea Patterson ranks third in the USFL stats for passing yards, with 973. He finishes his time with the Panthers with a 59.6% completion rate, tossing four touchdowns and five interceptions. Patterson added another 171 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

It was not all bad for Patterson. In Michigan’s Week 5 game against the Tampa Bay Bandits, Patterson completed 23-of-37 passes for 304 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for another 46 yards.

The latest tweet from Shea Patterson suggests this isn’t the end of the road for his football career, saying “the hustle will be worth it.”

It appears he won’t be waiting long, because the New Orleans Breakers have actually claimed Patterson off of waivers.
