SailGP, ‘world’s most exciting race on water’, is all set to hit Kiwi shores for the first time from today, Saturday, March 18, 2023, to Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour.

New Zealand SailGP is the 10th event of Season 3, with only Grand Finale left to play in San Francisco (6-7 May). This racing event is also the first of a four-year deal with New Zealand, with racing scheduled to head to Auckland in 2024.

Nine teams will be representing their nations in two days of intense races with high-tech, high-speed racing action in hydro-foiling F50 catamarans, flying at speed of up to 100 km/h (founded in 2019 by Sir Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison).

SailGP New Zealand Preview:

Fans will be able to see exhilarating racing, intense rivalries, and action-packed entertainment for two days, as a crowd of 15,000 is expected to witness the action.

In a two-day racing event, three fleet races will take place on day one and then three more and the final race on day two. 10 points are rewarded to the winner and nine to the second-placed side. The top three teams after the six fleet races will take part in the final race and the winner will be decided by adding 10 more points to its overall standings.

Talking about teams, team United States which competed in the $1 million final race, haven’t done well this season and has approached the New Zealand event with former flight controller Rome Kirby returning in the role of tactician/grinder and  Cameron Farrah in the strategist role.

Seasoned sailor Glenn Ashby has replaced the former wing trimmer Stu Bithell in the Switzerland SailGP team and the young Swiss team would like to take benefit from his wealth of benefit.

Tom Slingsby, former America’s Cup winner is leading another dominant campaign for the Australian team as they’re chasing a hat-trick of titles, with 12 points above second-placed New Zealand.
