After defeating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship, the Kansas City Chiefs are now in a position to make NFL History. Throughout the Super Bowl era of the NFL, there has never been a franchise to win three Super Bowls in a row. The closest that we got was the Green Bay Packers winning the first two Super Bowls. They did win the championship the season before the first Super Bowl, but given that it was not technically a Super Bowl, it doesn’t count. With the opportunity to win three straight Super Bowls, the Chiefs have the opportunity to etch their name further in sports history.
Read on for a short history of three-peats in sports since 1990.
Three-Peats in Sports Since 1980 | Super Bowl LIX
NBA Finals Three-Peats
The most recent three-peat in the “Big 4” of sports was the early 2000s Los Angeles Lakers. Led by the greatest duo in NBA History – Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. With Shaq’s dominance inside partnered with Kobe’s dynamic scoring and perimeter defense, the Lakers torched the Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets. With key role players like Derek Fisher, Rick Fox and Robert Horry, the early Lakers were some of the most dominant NBA teams of all time.
Under the leadership of Phil Jackson with superstars Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, the Chicago Bulls famously took home two three-peats in the 1990s. From 1991-93, the Bulls finally overcame the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics in the East to move the needle to the next level. With help from role players like Horace Grant and John Paxson, the Bulls perfected their triangle offense. After Jordan’s sudden retirement in the mid-1990s, the Bulls embarked on their second three-peat when Jordan returned. This time though, the Bulls featured Dennis Rodman and Toni Kukoc to take down the Utah Jazz twice etching the franchise in immortality.
WNBA Finals Three-Peat
The one and only time that there was a three-peat in WNBA history was very early in the league’s existence. From 1997-2000, the Houston Comets won four straight championships. The Comets featured three of the greatest players in league history, with Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson. The trio kicked off the first four years of the league’s existence in style.
World Series Three-Peat
The only time that a three-peat has been achieved in Major League Baseball over the last 35 years was with the New York Yankees from 1998-2000. Now, looking back, the late nineties were a prime time for teams repeating as champions. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, who were recently inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, kickstarted their careers off strong. Add to the fact that the Yankees featured Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemons and Orlando Hernandez pitching, as well as Jorge Posada, Tino Martinez and Bernie Williams in the field, and the last great dynasty in professional baseball was born.
