It is often hard to slow down and appreciate life and the world we live in. In today’s fast-paced world, the days and weeks fly by in the blink of an eye. It’s hard for many to be able to stay grounded, keep perspective, and live a life worth living. Although he was only with us for 23 years, nobody embodied this more than Andrew Wernicke.

Andrew’s Battle

On May 22nd, 2010, Andrew Wernicke was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 11. As chemotherapy and radiation took their toll on his body, his mind never faltered. His fight against such a horrible disease served as an inspiration to so many. His journey took him across the country. Although he was given just five to six months to live in 2017, thanks to a fierce determination and a “never give up attitude,” Andrew would go on to live for an additional five years.

His treatments took him from coast to coast as he continued to fight. According to doctors in Wisconsin, Andrew was the longest-living survivor in the United States. Andrew refused to feel sorry for himself and was always patient. Andrew remained a beacon of light through it all and loved to live life. Through it all, he graduated high school and attended college. Even after a series of strokes in May 2020 left him unable to walk, he continued to fight back.

Cancer came back a total of six times and he battled tooth and nail each time. On May 6th, 2022 after an incredible 12-year battle with cancer, Andrew passed away. He was just 23 years old.

Andrew Wernicke Courage Foundation

This year, his family created the Andrew Wernicke Courage Foundation. The foundation was established to not only remember Andrew and to keep his story alive, but to also help children with cancer and their parents by providing financial and emotional support. The foundation has multiple fundraisers that help kids and families in many different ways. One of these fundraisers is called “A Gift from Andrew.” For every $2,000 donated, a gift is given to a special child to use on the things that they enjoy.

Last year, the family hosted the first Andrew Wernicke Annual Courage Golf Open. This year, it will take place on Saturday, August 19th. There are also other fun fundraisers and events that will take place in the near future to help remember Andrew while also raising money for such a great cause.

Even when faced with a debilitating disease at a young age, Andrew could always see the bigger picture. His foundation aims to help many kids facing the same disease that he has and to help ease the burden on their families as well.
