Nick Young and Omri Casspi to the Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors looked to improve on their championship season by adding two solid players in free agency. Nick Young will be joining the Warriors on a one-year deal worth $5.2 million and Omri Casspi signed for the veteran’s minimum of $2.1 million for one year as well. Young is coming off a season in which he both made and attempted career highs in three point field goals making 2.8 per game while attempting 7.0. Those numbers are good for his second best conversion rate of his career at 40.4%. Look for Young to have a more steady role off the bench for the Warriors. He will be most dangerous when he is put in to be the ‘x factor’ of sorts for the nights when the rest of the team has gone cold and the team needs a boost from the bench. Hopefully, the Warriors will be getting this Swaggy P and not this one.

Casspi, on the other hand, is coming off an injury riddled season in which he made brief stints in Sacramento, New Orleans, and Minnesota. Casspi offers plenty of length, being 6’ 9”, but with Steve Kerr and the Warriors trying to develop Patrick McCaw behind Kevin Durant, I doubt Casspi will play for more than a couple of minutes. Look for the Warriors to spread the floor, as usual, with Casspi off of the floor. Maybe we can see a little bit of this at some point this season or at a Warriors practice?

These moves are all fine, but I am concerned at the Warriors lack of depth in the frontcourt. Unless JaVale McGee resigns for the veteran minimum, the Warriors will need to ask for help from rookie draft pick Damian Jones sooner than anticipated. Overall, I don’t know how much the Warriors really improved if this is all they plan to do in free agency. They are still going to be a force to be reckoned with this season and, in my eyes, should be the favorites to win it all.
