San Diego State had one of their best seasons since the departure of Kawhi Leonard. Last season, the Aztecs won the Mountain West basketball regular season title, but Utah State won the conference tournament. Will this be the case this year? Or can San Diego State rally to win the Mountain West conference tournament?

Mountain West Basketball Conference Breakdown

San Diego State staked their claim as one of the better teams in college basketball this season. At the end of the season they were ranked towards the bottom of the top-25, making it as far up as 19. The Aztecs made their money on defense this season. While San Diego State is usually known to have a strong defense, this year they only gave up 60 points a game. On the offensive side of the ball, The Aztecs are average, though they do shoot 38% from three-point range. San Diego State will need to ride their defense to a Mountain West Tournament win.

After dropping their first game of the season, Boise State won 13 games in a row. The Broncos don’t excel at one part of their game, but their experience has allowed them to make a name in college basketball. Boise State starts three seniors, a junior and a sophomore. The Broncos rank 297th in turnovers per game. If they can cut down on turnovers and continue to play team ball, the Broncos could be a tough out in the Mountain West Tournament.

The preseason poll was almost spot on in its projected rankings. The biggest overachiever in relation to the preseason poll was Colorado State, who was projected to finish fifth, but actually finished third. The biggest underachiever in relation to the preseason rankings was UNLV who was projected to finish forth, but actually finished seventh.
