Most Likely Matthew Stafford Trade Destinations

After what looked like a dead season to start the season, the Los Angeles Rams made a furious comeback and pushed the Philadelphia Eagles to the limits in the Divisional Round. Now, as the Rams look to make another push to the playoffs, some things may be in the cards to change. Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp are only getting older and it feels like the Rams are still a few playmakers away from really contending. The good news for the Rams is that they have some young pieces to build around, along with Sean McVay still being one of the best coaches in the NFL. In order to get younger and move some money around, the Rams may need to find a Matthew Stafford trade to retool moving forward.

With the recent news coming out that the Rams allegedly gave Stafford’s agent permission to seek a trade, it seems inevitable that they move from their Super Bowl-winning quarterback. This should raise a green flag for many teams looking to contend with a quarterback, as Stafford is still a top-10 player at the position. He is sure to help quarterback-hungry teams, so with that being said, here are three possible Matthew Stafford trade destinations.

Possible Matthew Stafford Trade Destinations

Pittsburgh Steelers

Given the NFL Free Agency status surrounding both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, and Pittsburgh being in a spot where they can contend for a Super Bowl given their defense, it makes sense for Pittsburgh to keep rolling the dice on veteran quarterbacks. With Stafford being the cream of the crop when it comes to quarterback being available, it makes sense for the Steelers to take a swing. The receiving room probably needs a little bit of work yet, as George Pickens is probably the only consistent option on the team.

This could be a situation where a Matthew Stafford trade between the Steelers and Rams turns into a mega deal. It may be tough to pull off, but theoretically, if the Steelers are interested in Stafford, they might as well ask about Cooper Kupp as well. As stated before, Pittsburgh still has one of the better defenses in the NFL and it feels like what they are missing is a reliable, elite quarterback. Stafford can certainly fill that role and should be at least a piece to help the Steelers get over the hump.

Minnesota Vikings

It sounds like the Minnesota Vikings could try to retain Sam Darnold, but given his success last season, I would imagine there will be some teams offering some money. To add more complications to the Vikings’ quarterback room is the status of J.J. McCarthy. Reports surrounding McCarthy suggest that he still has some rehab to go before he is 100%. That means if the Vikings are unable to retain Darnold, then they may look to bring in a veteran quarterback like Stafford or Aaron Rodgers.

Stafford makes some kind of sense to land in Minnesota given his and Kevin O’Connell’s history together in Los Angeles. With receiving weapons like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson, along with Aaron Jones and Cam Akers in the backfield, having a top-10 quarterback in the game instantly makes the Vikings an elite offense. It is no secret that McCarthy is the future for the Vikings, so bringing in Stafford to mentor McCarthy for at least a year seems like a smart idea.

Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans have been a popular landing spot for a potential Aaron Rodgers move, but I think looking at Stafford is another option. Even though they have the top overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, I don’t think that the Titans were the worst team in the NFL this season. In a deal surrounding Stafford, the Titans should be able to retain the number one pick. That gives them the opportunity to bolster a spot of need, from the likes of Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter. Given the poor quarterback play, if the Titans can land Stafford and upgrade their offensive line, the AFC South is certainly not out of their grasp.

There is already some familiarity as Titans head coach Brian Callahan was Stafford’s quarterback coach in Detroit. I don’t hate the idea of the Titans bringing in a veteran quarterback and then spending a mid-round pick on a young quarterback as well, giving Stafford the opportunity to mentor someone for the Titans’ future.
