Michigan State Basketball Preview | College Basketball Betting Picks
When we start breaking down Michigan State this season, something becomes abundantly clear: this is as close to a Tom Izzo-coached team as Michigan State has had in years. The Spartans rely on strong defensive play and beating opposing teams down in the paint. So far through the season, that has worked in favor of Sparty as Michigan State has beaten five ranked opponents, including eighth-ranked Purdue in their most recent game. While they do have nice wins on their resume, including games over Arkansas, North Carolina and Illinois, Michigan State has run into some trouble with the likes of the elite teams in the country, losing to Duke and Michigan.
Since getting blown out of the building at home to Wisconsin, Michigan State has rebounded well, winning each of its last games. As I stated before, this Michigan State team relies on both physical defense and physical offense. On top of that being Izzo’s forte, he once again has stars at the lead guard and the wing positions. Jeremiah Fears is the lead guard of the team, who is playing as well as any lead guard in the country this season, as he averages just short of 15 points per game (PPG) and just north of 9.1 assists per game (APG). Senior forward Jaxon Kohler has continued to develop into a college basketball star in East Lansing, as he works the low post and can step out and hit a three. He averages 12 PPG and 9 RPG. Finally, junior wing Coen Carr rounds out the three-headed monster, as he has turned into appointment television. Carr shows off his insane athleticism with ferocious dunks and some of the best blocks you have ever seen.
The defense for Michigan State is the bread and butter of the team, as they are limiting opposing teams to just 66.4 PPG, which ranks 22nd in the country. In fact, Sparty has given up 70 or more points just nine times this season. They are holding opponents to just 40.1% shooting from the field, good for 22nd in the country.

Historically, Indiana has been one of those; they are incredible teams when they are good and sad to watch when they are bad. While it is going to be insanely difficult to get back to the glory days of Bob Knight, Indiana is taking a swing with Darian DeVries, who has been the ring leader of some really good Drake teams as of recent years. Darian was not the only big fish that the Hoosiers landed, as DeVries brought his son Tucker with him.
In DeVries’ first year leading the Hoosiers, things have not gone completely the way that he and the faithful had hoped. Indiana cruised its way through a non-remarkable non-conference schedule to a tune of seven straight wins to start the season, but when matching up with better teams, Indiana has failed to live up to the competition. Against ranked opponents this season, the Hoosiers sport a 1-7 record, with their sole win coming against Purdue. While the ranked matchup record is not in Indiana’s favor, what they have done outside of that has excited a lot of people, as with the record, Joe Lunardi has the Hoosiers firmly on the bubble, as his last team in the field.
With the DeVries duo leading the way, the Hoosiers’ offense marches as well as Tucker does. Though he is not the leading scorer on the team, DeVries was one of the biggest movers in the transfer portal this offseason. His senior season at Indiana has been somewhat disappointing, given the high expectations; he is shooting just 39.5% from the field, but is scoring 13.6 PPG. Though DeVries has been disappointing, senior wing Lamar Wilkerson has been one of the better unheralded players in the sport this season. Wilkerson is averaging 21 PPG on 46% shooting. Tayton Conway is the only other double-figure-scoring Hoosier, averaging 10.3 PPG this season.

This is a really interesting game to look at when predicting who is going to win. On one hand, Indiana is fighting for their postseason lives. Being firmly on the bubble, a win over a ranked Michigan State team would do wonders for their tournament resume. On the other hand, Michigan State has been playing really good basketball lately and are clearly the better team in this one. My worry for Indiana is that they do not have enough fire power to keep up with Michigan State’s intense and physical defense. If Sparty is able to hold DeVries or Wilkerson to having a bad game, it is hard to be confident in another Hoosier stepping up and making those points up. For Michigan State, they need to stick with their brand of basketball, work inside out. That makes me think Kohler comes away with a big game in this one, giving Sparty yet another Big Ten win.
