Michigan State opened up the season at home against Northern Arizona with a win, 73-55. They shot exceptionally well, but take that for what it is worth against a Northern Arizona team that is ranked 263rd at KenPom. Joey Hauser led the team with 18 points, shooting 50% from the field, and 50% from three-point range. He also chipped in 10 rebounds in 31 minutes. Pierre Brooks and Hauser were the only two Spartans to hit double-digits, as Brooks scored 14. Freshman Jaxson Kohler had a good debut, checking in with six points, nine rebounds, and an assist while shooting 60% from the field. I expect Michigan State to show some fight, but the talent on this team lacks from years past, so I do not expect them to beat Gonzaga.
Gonzaga, on the other hand, returns Drew Timme for the fourth year. He has averaged close to 20 points per game in the previous two years. With there being no clear star other than him at this moment, they will have to look Timme’s way in this game often and early. Malachai Smith, a transfer from Chattanooga, will be a vital piece of the bench, as he dropped 15 against North Florida. Gonzaga should run away with this game in the second half, but I will not rule out a Tom Izzo-led spartan team in any fashion.
