Miami (OH) Basketball Preview | College Basketball Betting Picks
Not many people paid attention to the MAC coming into this season, but they are now, thanks to Miami’s historic undefeated run. With just one game left, the RedHawks have a chance to finish the regular season 31-0. Unfortunately, the team standing in their way is Ohio, who haven’t lost at home to Miami since January 9th, 2011, and is currently on a 14-game home winning streak.
This year, Miami (OH) has plenty of reason to feel that this season will be different; however, they have struggled as of late. While they are undefeated, they’ve won their last two games by just two points. The RedHawks have been able to win many close games this year due to their incredibly balanced offensive attack. While their offense won’t blow anyone out of the gym, they have seven players who average double-digit points per game.
For teams to be undefeated, they need a certain amount of luck. With that being said, there’s also a reason teams are undefeated as long as Miami. They take care of the ball and are solid in all areas offensively. As a team, the RedHawks shoot over 52% from the field, over 39% from deep, and just under 75% from the free throw line. There isn’t a weakness, so to speak, to exploit, so their opponents need to outplay them to win. With a team as deep as theirs, that’s a big reason why they still sport a zero in the loss column.
Ohio Basketball Preview | College Basketball Betting Picks
While Miami (OH) has been pretty consistent and steady all year, Ohio has looked more like a rollercoaster. After starting the season 1-6, the Bobcats rattled off nine wins over their next 10 games. They then quickly lost four of their next five before winning four of their next six. Since then, they have lost two in a row and face an uphill battle against the RedHawks.
This will be the second time these two teams meet this year, with Miami coming away with a convincing 90-74 win at home just last month. Ohio never really tested Miami as they were held to just 24% shooting from deep while Miami shot 52% from the field and 50% from three-point range. The biggest issue for Ohio in that game was that they lost the free throw battle badly. In fact, Ohio attempted less free throws (20) than Miami made (21). It’s hard to imagine Miami will be able to shoot as well as they did again in this matchup, but if Ohio doesn’t win the battle at the charity stripe, Miami is much too deep for them.
The difference makers for Ohio will be forwards Aidan Hadaway and Javan Simmons. The pair have combined to average over 28 points per game in the regular season, but combined for just 20 in their last matchup with Miami. If Hadaway and Simmons can pick up the slack, along with star guard Jackson Paveletzke continuing to be productive offensively, Ohio has as good a chance as any to knock off Miami for the first time this season.
Miami vs Ohio Prediction | College Basketball Betting Picks
Ohio absolutely has the firepower to take down Miami in this game. With the way the RedHawks have struggled against Toledo and a bad Western Michigan team in their past two games, they are certainly vulnerable. Unfortunately for Ohio, their success hinges on all three of their star players playing at or above their season averages at the same time. Miami did a good job at shutting down Ohio’s offense last time out, and nothing less than one of their best offensive performances of the season will cut it for Ohio.
This game will come down to Aidan Hadaway, Javan Simmons and Jackson Paveletzke. For as good as Miami is, this is a road rivalry game in Athens, Ohio, with a raucous crowd that wants to spoil Miami’s fun. If the Bobcats’ trio can play their game and score like they’ve shown they can at times this year, it’s hard to imagine any team stopping them, including Miami. With that being said, Miami simply needs to play their game and/or take one of Ohio’s top three threats off of its game to get past the Bobcats. With that outcome being a lot more likely, bet on Miami to win and cover the small spread.
