The Miami Hurricanes tried to add another game to their current ACC lead on Wednesday. The Virginia Tech Hokies hosted the Hurricanes in hopes of stopping their charge. The Hokies took the ACC-leading Hurricanes to the wire, as Miami’s Charlie Moore hit a buzzer-beating half-court shot to win the game.

Virginia Tech surprised fans, as they not only covered the five-point spread, but they were in a position to push the game to overtime. However, the Hokies went down, 78-75.

Miami Basketball Fends off Virginia Tech Comeback

Miami led by five coming out of halftime. As the second half of the game progressed, Virginia Tech closed that lead. Virginia Tech’s Hunter Cattoor made a three-point shot, which was later partnered with a Justyn Mutts layup to bring a lead of 75-70 with just over two minutes to play. The Hokies then went cold, missing their last eight shots to end the game. After a missed Miami layup, Isaiah Wong was fouled on a three-point shot, leading to three free throws. Wong made all three free throws to tie the game up at 75.

Miami’s Kameron McGusty was called for an offensive foul with 28 seconds left to give Virginia Tech the ball. Cattoor missed a three-point shot, where Miami controlled the rebound. The Hurricanes called a timeout with one second left. On that possession, Moore made the game-winning half-court shot.

McGusty led all Miami scorers with 19 points. Jordan Miller scored 18 points and Moore added another 13. Wong and Sam Waardenburg added another 12 apiece.

Virginia Tech’s Keve Aluma scored 14 points. Cattoor, Nahiem Alleyne and Darius Maddox all scored another 13 points.

Miami basketball will take on Georgia Tech on Saturday, while Virginia Tech will take on Florida State.
