After a 101-win regular season, the most for the New York Mets since 1988, they will now be forced to win two games in a row as they fight for their MLB Playoff lives following an embarrassing 7-1 loss to Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres. Max Scherzer was flat for the Mets, giving up seven earned runs.

Let’s take a look at how the Mets managed to get blown out at home and what NL Wild Card Game 2 has in store.

Max Scherzer Falls Flat in Mets Playoff Debut

What an excruciating night for Mets fans. There are not many positives to hang onto following that loss. The game got out of hand almost immediately, as the Padres scored two runs off a Josh Bell home run in the top of the first inning and never looked back.

Scherzer, who signed with the Mets this season for $130 million guaranteed, lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits along the way.

The lone Mets run came in the form of an Eduardo Escobar solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Already down seven runs, it did nothing to spark the team or fanbase, and would be the last run scored by either team in the game.

Mets Face MLB Playoff Elimination

Prior to the start of this NL Wild Card series, the Mets announced they planned to rest their ace Jacob deGrom until reaching the Divisional Round series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After losing Game 1 in the fashion they did, there is absolutely no way they can’t pitch him in Game 2.

New Mets owner Steve Cohen has been mostly loved by the fanbase up to this point, but imagining a world where he and manager Buck Showalter have to explain not pitching deGrom at all before being eliminated is tough.

NL Wildcard Game 2 Start Time and Starting Pitchers

As of now, there has been no official announcement as to who will take the mound for the Mets in Game 2, but you can almost be certain it will be Jacob deGrom in what could be his last start ever in a Mets uniform.

The Padres have already announced they will start Blake Snell, who will have the chance to close out the series and advance his Padres to the next round.

The first pitch from Citi Field in Queens, NY is slated for 7:37 PM EST, with coverage available on ESPN.
