Matt McLain is a 2024 Fantasy Baseball Breakout Candidate at 2B

The Cincinnati Reds were a Cinderella story in 2023, and perhaps the most underappreciated piece of that was Matt McLain. I want to be clear here, people know about McLain, but perhaps we’re still undervaluing the young stud for fantasy. Below, we’ll discuss why the Matt McLain fantasy baseball value is high for 2024. In fact, he could be a breakout player for your team.

Matt McLain Fantasy Baseball Breakout Candidate

Matt McLain gives fantasy baseball owners options with the 2B/SS combo, and last year finished with a .290 BA and an .864 OPS. He also did so with the expectation he would split more time, but with steroid issues plaguing some of the Reds’ plans, McLain should still be a fixture in the everyday lineup now. While his numbers are only one-year samples, the most exciting part for McLain is the room for growth.

He didn’t get to see a full year despite his great production, so a juicy spot in an exciting Reds lineup projects McLain having his slugging and HR numbers climbing. Matt McLain will also have the benefit of being in one of the weaker fantasy baseball positions, as 2B is not a top-end paradise. So, getting a versatile, upside-heavy pick in the sixth round of most fantasy baseball drafts is really intriguing.

McLain is projected to be a top-10 second baseman in most leagues, but he is only being taken as a backup option in many leagues. So, while the youth is a risk, McLain, like the rest of this Reds team, seems to be ahead of schedule.
