Marquette vs NC State Prediction | March Madness Sweet 16 Picks
Coming into this March Madness run, the key factor for Marquette was the health of star point guard Tyler Kolek. The All-American missed the final six games prior to the NCAA Tournament and was thought to still have lingering pain. Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, he returned to his peak form in the first weekend. Against Western Kentucky and Colorado, Kolek averaged 21 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 11 assists while making key plays down the stretch in round two. To complement Kolek, Marquette has a high-level offensive wing in Kam Jones and a versatile two-way big in Oso Ighodaro. They are right on the edge of having a top-20 offense and defense which is typically an important threshold for being a national title contender.
For NC State, their miracle run continued in the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. After needing to win five straight games in the ACC Tournament just to qualify for the big dance, the Wolfpack defeated Texas Tech and Oakland to advance to the Sweet 16. They have a 275-pound center in DJ Burns who is becoming a fan favorite thanks to his playmaking and feel around the rim. Guard DJ Horne leads the team in scoring at 16.7 a game.
This matchup will likely come down to which center can create more of an advantage on the offensive end. In theory, both Ighodaro and Burns should be able to find success against each other. Ighodaro will be able to make Burns guard on the perimeter while Burns will be able to punish Ighodaro in the post. I believe Marquette has more options to complement their matchup advantages.
