As we find ourselves just over a quarter way through the 2023 season, the “highly anticipated” Kyle Pitts fantasy football breakout season has hit an all-time low. Ever since Pitts was drafted fourth overall by the Falcons in the 2021 NFL Draft, he has not lived up to expectations. This season, unexpectedly, gave us a new twist, as it was the Falcons trading for a tight end in the offseason.
Enter Jonnu Smith. Since Week 2, Smith has not only been outperforming Pitts, but he has done it by a decent margin. In PPR scoring, Jonnu Smith ranks as TE8 and Kyle Pitts‘ fantasy ranking is TE28. Additionally, Jonnu Smith has six more receptions, two more targets, 102 more receiving yards, and 5.6 more points in PPR scoring than Pitts during this span. The only category where Pitts maintains an edge is snap counts.
Looking ahead to the Week 5 matchup against the Houston Texans, Houston’s defense falls right in the middle in terms of points allowed to tight ends, allowing the 15th-most in the league. However, it’s the Texans’ recent struggles against tight ends that make this matchup intriguing.
In two of their last three games, the Texans have allowed a tight end to record 47 receiving yards, a threshold that Jonnu Smith has been able to accomplish in two of his last three games, but something Kyle Pitts has not reached in his last seven games. Meanwhile, Pitts has not gone over 45 receiving yards in his last seven games. If it couldn’t get any worse, the Texans have allowed a tight end to score 6.9 points in PPR scoring in two of their last three games. Jonnu Smith has scored at least 8.7 points in his last three games, but Kyle Pitts has underperformed as he has not scored more than 6.9 points in either of his home games this season.
While Kyle Pitts is the more well-known name, it’s time to consider shifting your attention to the other Falcons tight end Jonnu Smith. He has been consistently outperforming Pitts, and he has been giving success to the tight end position lately.
