With the 27th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars draft Devin Lloyd, linebacker, out of Utah. Lloyd was a stat sheet stuffer in his final collegiate season, posting exceptional numbers and productivity across virtually every category. He helped lead the Utes to a Pac-12 Conference title and figures to help the Jags right away. Let’s take a closer look at Lloyd.

    Devin Lloyd Draft Profile

    Strengths

When it comes to productivity and physicality, Devin Lloyd checks all of the boxes. He was first recognized as one of the premier defenders in the Pac-12 Conference as a sophomore when he led Utah with 91 total tackles. Lloyd had easily his best statistical campaign as a senior and helped lead the Utes to the Pac-12 title. Lloyd has an aggressive and physical nature to his game, but he complements it with keen awareness. His ability to track the football through thick scrums leads to him making some incredible plays and also avoiding deception. He is a sure tackler and possesses some sound pass-rushing qualities as well.

    Weaknesses

While Lloyd has the physical attributes and skill set necessary to play multiple linebacker positions, he will need to improve upon his current scheme diagnosis abilities. Lloyd proved especially susceptible when facing zone blocking schemes in college. Another element that will require improvement is his lower body control. Lloyd’s lack of discipline when moving laterally has resulted in him losing battles to blockers before they even truly engage. He also could stand to polish his footwork and mobility in pass coverage.

What to Expect From Devin Lloyd in 2022

Devin Lloyd represents the second impactful defender that the Jacksonville Jaguars managed to snag on Night 1 of the NFL Draft. With Myles Jack having left Duval County this offseason, the Jags had a gaping hole to fill in the middle of their defense via the draft. Lloyd will step right into regular playing time from the onset of his career. Lloyd stuffed the stat sheet full throughout his collegiate career. He is a very athletic and versatile backer who will help the Jaguars defend both the pass and the run.
