The Cam Robinson was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 17. By placing the franchise tag on the offensive tackle, he is now prevented from becoming a free agent.
Jaguars Franchise Tag Cam Robinson
The Jaguars selected Robinson in the second-round of the 2017 NFL Draft at the No. 34 overall pick out of the University of Alabama. He has played 47 games over the course of four NFL seasons. Robinson missed 14 games in 2018 due to a torn ACL. He came back and has had two very successful seasons in 2019 and 2020.
Robinson started all 16 games in 2020 and was part of helping rookie running back James Robinson accumulate the most scrimmage yards (1,414) and the second-most rushing yards (1,070) by an undrafted rookie in NFL history.
“George Warhop feels very strong about his future and his development,” said head coach Urban Meyer on Tuesday afternoon. “He has a great future. His ceiling is very high. I’ve studied him very much. I’ve spent some time with him.”
Meyer said the Jaguars franchise tagged Robinson with hopes of signing him to a long-term deal. He said this could be reached this offseason.
[sc name=”nfl-fa-date” ]Per NFL rules, applying the franchise tag on Robinson means if another team wanted him, they would have to give the Jaguars two first-round draft picks in order to sign him. It also means Robinson will now play under a one-year contract in 2021, unless he and the Jaguars agree to a long-term deal.
Meyer spoke Tuesday on the Jaguars offensive line, saying that it’s an area that needs to be improved upon in 2021. He believes the offensive line has talent that can play well together.
Specifically speaking on Robinson, Meyer said the Jaguars’ intent is “to have Cam Robinson play for the Jaguars for a while.”
