Just a few short weeks after their last premium event, AEW is back with another PPV event, WrestleDream, to pay homage to the great Antonio Inoki, the founder of New Japan Pro Wrestling, by putting on a show during the first anniversary of his death.

It’s the company’s third PPV offering in five weeks and its sixth pay-per-view event in 2023, an AEW record for shows in a calendar year.

AEW WrestleDream Preview

It’s AEW’s second straight PPV without an AEW world title defense due to the MJF-Adam Cole storyline. Adam Cole is out of the show after sustaining an ankle injury while running out to the ring and jumping off the ramp last Wednesday.

Tony Khan and company previously announced 13 matches for the PPV event but have added another fixture in the already packed card, Keith Lee and ROH Women’s World Champion Athena, to the Zero Hour pre-show in a 4-on-4 mixed tag team match.

It’s worth mentioning that there are rumors that WWE Hall of Famer Edge could make his debut at AEW WrestleDream.

NJPW World Television Champion Zack Sabre Jr. and Bryan Danielson will battle it in their long-awaited dream match. Will Ospreay will join forces with the Don Callis Family in trios action against Chris Jericho and the Golden Lovers.

After claiming the TNT Championship from Luchasaurus, Christian Cage will defend his AEW TNT Title against Darby Allin in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match.

Of course, these aren’t the only exciting fixtures on the card; with world-renowned talents such as the Lucha Bros, Katsuyori Shibata, Aussie Open, The Elite, Will Ospreay, Orange Cassidy, and many more lined up to appear, WrestleDream is a dream event for wrestling fans.

Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

Bryan Danielson challenged Zack Sabre Jr., and the match was confirmed shortly afterward by AEW. Danielson is six years older and has five years more experience in wrestling.

The match-up was supposed to take place at the Forbidden Door 2022 event, but Bryan suffered an injury and was replaced by Claudio Castagnoli.

Christian Cage vs. Darby Allin

The rivalry between Christian Cage and Darby Allin started when the latter became the no. 1 contender for the AEW TNT Championship, held by Christian’s stablemate Luchasaurus.

Although Luchasaurus was the true TNT champion, Christian often carried the title and claimed to be the champion.

Christian won the triple threat match at Collision, and as he was celebrating his win, he was told about his first title defense against Darby Allin in a 2-out-of-3 falls match.

Konosuke Takeshita, Will Ospreay & Sammy Guevara vs. Kota Ibushi, Kenny Omega & Chris Jericho

At the Dynamite Grand Slam, when Jericho defeated Sammy in a singles match, Sammy hit Jericho after the match with a low blow before joining Don Callis.

Jericho confronted Sammy and Callis on Rampage Grand Slam. When Sammy and Takeshita attacked Jericho, Omega came out to his help. AEW then announced a tag team match with Sammy, Takeshita, and Ospreay facing Jericho, Omega, and Ibushi at WrestleDream.

FTR(Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood)(c) vs. Aussie Open(Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher) – AEW Tag Team Championship

FTR revealed the plan on Collision on September 9 to give opportunities to new tag teams and defend the title against them as they had already defeated all the big teams.

After their defense against Iron Savages on Collision on September 16, the Aussie Open challenged them (FTR) for the title match at WrestleDream.

MJF(c) vs. The Righteous – Handicap Match for ROH Tag Team Championship

MJF and Adam Cole won the ROH Tag Team Championship at the All Out event. The Righteous won a 4-way tag team match at Rampage Grand Slam 2023 to become the No. 1 contender for ROH Tag Team titles.

Adam Cole suffered an ankle injury at Dynamite Grand Slam, which required surgery. He wanted to renounce the titles, but MJF stopped him and said he would defend the title against The Righteous.

Hook & Orange Cassidy vs. The Young Bucks vs. Lucha Bros vs. The Gunns – #1 Contender match for AEW Tag Team Championship

Tony Khan and company announced a 4-way match to find a new no. 1 contender for the AEW Tag Team Championship. As a preview to this match, a fatal 4-way match took place on the Dynamite September 27 episode between Orange Cassidy, Penta, Austin Gunn & Matt Jackson.
